When it comes to Black Friday lines and store hours on Thanksgiving, there's one age group in particular that's more likely to support mixing retail and holiday time.

Two new studies have found that Millennials are less likely to be miffed by a daunting shopping environment on Black Friday, and they're more likely to be okay with stores being open on Thanksgiving.

According to a recent hhgregg-commissioned survey of 3,500 shoppers in the U.S., Millennials are much more likely than Boomers to head to the stores on Black Friday (63% vs. 40%).

At $444.5 billion, retail sales recovered much of the ground lost in September, increasing 0.3% for the month and 4.1% since October 2013.

The better-than-expected pickup last month is contextualized by dramatically lower gas prices and record post-recession highs for consumer confidence.

Retail trade sales (not counting food services) were also up 0.3% since September and 3.8% since last year. Nonstore retailers saw considerably more progress at a yearly increase of 9.1%, while auto and motor vehicle dealers were up 8.3%.

The national unemployment rate dropped even further in October to 5.8%, given the addition of 214,000 new jobs to the economy.

The number of unemployed persons also dropped in October to 9.0 million. That figure has declined by 1.2 million since the beginning of this year.

However, many crucial metrics -- such as the number of long-term unemployed, those employed part-\ time for economic reasons, those marginally attached to the labor force and discouraged workers -- saw little progress. The civilian labor force participation rate was relatively flat at 62.8% in October.

Lowe's Innovation Labs will introduce two autonomous retail service robots in an Orchard Supply Hardware store in midtown San Jose, California, during the upcoming holiday season to study how robotics technology can benefit customers and employees. Called OSHbot, the robots will assist customers to navigate stores by directing them to specific products and providing real-time information about product promotions and inventory.

National Retail Federation Senior VP for Government Relations David French has been named a "Top Lobbyist" by the Capitol Hill newspaper The Hill.

He was cited for leading the retail industry's efforts on data and payment security, patent reform and online sales tax legislation.

French joined the NRF in 2011, and he has been recognized on the list in each of the four years since.

Mills, the 42-year-old vice president of Mills Fleet Farm, a 34-store farm and ranch chain based in Brainerd, Minnesota, is looking to bring the common sense nurtured in a career in retail to the halls of Washington.

His big complaints concerning the current state of national politics: “the bickering, the debt, and Obamacare.”

For Tractor Supply Company, the third quarter was business as usual, which meant double-digit sales gains for the leading farm-and-ranch retail chain.

Additionally, the company is raising its fiscal 2014 outlook to the high ends of the existing ranges of $5.62 billion to $5.70 billion in net sales, as well as $2.54 to $2.62 in diluted earnings per share.

Adjusted estimated retail sales for building material and garden equipment & supplies dealers (NAICS 444) were down 1.1% in September, totaling $27.3 billion for the month.

Total U.S. retail and food services sales, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences (but not for price changes), were down 0.3% to $442.7 billion. However, this was still 4.3% above September 2013's rate.

Retail trade sales were down 0.4% month-over-month, but up 4.0% year-over-year.

Washington, D.C.-based Logan Hardware, a member of the nine-store Ace Chain "A Few Cool Hardware Stores," has officially reopened the doors at its new location after months of construction.

Effective Oct. 9, the store was open to customers, though the store is still in the process of completing certain renovations.

The national unemployment rate declined to 5.9%, that's the lowest it's been since July 2008.

The September unemployment rate benefited from 248,000 new jobs. At 62.7% the labor participation rate was little changed.

Professional and business services, retail, and health care enjoyed most of the job gains, with 35,000 new positions added in retail.

Construction also enjoyed a bit of a boost, gaining 16,000 jobs overall, with 6,000 of those in residential building.
