The Merit Distribution Group will acquire Dynamic Paint Products, a 40-year-old family-owned distributor and manufacturer of paint-related products based out of Toronto, Canada.

The companies announced the deal early Tuesday. Terms were not disclosed.

Originally named Mumby and Associates, Dynamic mainly served the Toronto area, but over the years has seen exponential growth throughout Canada. Dynamic’s brand of paint-related products are currently sold throughout the world.

Sandy Kennedy, president of the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA), has offered her two cents on the standoff surrounding the union negotiations at the West Coast ports.

Kennedy addressed a letter to the heads of the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), speaking on behalf of retailers who are experiencing uncertainty and instability over the ongoing conflict.

Craig Cowart will succeed Doug Miller as president of Houston-based hardware distributor Handy Hardware, effective Oct. 1. 

Cowart will lead Handy as it distances itself from its tumultuous recent period and builds on its “ProfitPlus” value proposition, the company said.

The Home Depot announced that current CEO Frank Blake will be passing the torch to Craig Menear this fall.

Menear, who is currently serving as president U.S. retail, will take over as CEO and president as of Nov. 1, 2014. He has also been elected to the company's board of directors, effective immediately.

The Home Depot’s President of U.S. Retail Craig Menear had plenty of positive numbers to discuss from a merchandising standpoint after the company reported comp-store sales growth of 5.8% in the second quarter.

All three U.S. divisions had positive comps, and also beat their sales plan, Menear said. Additionally, all departments had positive comps for the quarter, in which Home Depot reported sales of $23.8 billion.

The Merit Distribution Group today formed a joint venture partnership with Exciting Windows, supplier to independent window covering business owners.

Exciting Windows will function as an integral part of the Merit Décor Group division of Lancaster, which provides independent business owners with value-added decorative products, programs and services. Steve Bursten, CEO, and Steve Wishnow, President, will continue to lead Exciting Windows under this new joint venture. Both have been with the company since its inception 10 years ago.

Kmart has a new president and chief member officer in Alasdair James, who will be leaving his job as Tesco's commercial director, global business.

In his new role, James will be charged with driving the Kmart format strategy, managing the Kmart P&L and aligning merchandise, marketing, pricing and selling for Shop Your Way members.

AV Homes is expanding its footprint into the Jacksonville market with the purchase of 80 acres in the metro, which deal closed Aug. 8 for an undisclosed price.

"This property is beautiful and truly unique," said David Smith, Florida division president. "The AV Homes team is committed to creating a community in harmony with its natural surroundings for future residents to enjoy."

The move puts AV Homes on the map in a community whose economic fundamentals have made a strong showing as of late, creating ripe conditions for new home demand.

Kodiak Building Partners purchased substantially all the assets of AO, Inc., a Dallas based fabricator and distributor of doors, frames and hardware to commercial contractors for the office build-out market.

The move brings Denver, Colorado-based Kodiak deeper into Texas, and follows acquisitions of Gulf & Basco and Factory Builder Stores.

US LBM Holdings has expanded its footprint yet again via the acquisition of Brooklyn-based Samuel Feldman Lumber Co.

Owners Robert and Kenneth Feldman will remain on-board, with Kenneth stepping in as president of Feldman Lumber.

STAFDA president Eric Grabowski says the association’s distributors are regaining ground lost since the recession of 2007. 

In a column from the STAFDA Trade News newsletter, Grabowski, of Edge Construction Supply of Spokane, Washington, said construction jobs are showing growth in the Northwest.

Ralph Bruno has been named president of Novik Sales Corp., the division of Novik Inc. responsible for marketing Novik products throughout the United States.

Bruno brings more than 25 years of success in the building products industry to his new position. Of note are the years he spent with Trex and as president of AZEK Building Products. Bruno will be responsible for designing and implementing the U.S. going-to-market strategy for Novik and will lead the U.S. sales team.

The Home Depot has promoted Ted Decker to the position of EVP merchandising, where he will take the helm of the company's merchandising strategy and operations. Effective Aug. 4, Decker will transition from his most recent role as SVP retail finance and begin reporting to Craig Menear, president U.S. Retail.

Decker has been with the company for 14 years, during which time he played an integral role in the company's merchandising transformation and led the implementation of new pricing and analytics processes.

Exterior building products manufacturer Ply Gem appointed Eric Spence senior VP sales and marketing for the Ply Gem Windows group.

In this newly created role, Spence is responsible for expanding Ply Gem Windows’ sales and marketing efforts, aligning the two functions under one common structure. He reports to Ply Gem Windows president Art Steinhafel, and is located at the Ply Gem corporate and windows group headquarters in Cary, North Carolina.

Barrington, Illinois-based EcoPlanet Bamboo Group has nabbed three former Weyerhaeuser executives in its latest hiring spree.

Of these, former Weyerhaeuser Solutions president Marvin Risco has been named group president. He has held multiple positions at Weyerhaeuser over the years, ranging from financial director for Weyerhaeuser Forestlands International to VP international operations in Latin America, Europe and Asia.

Knoxville, Tenn.-based House-Hasson Hardware says its June 19-21 dealer broke all previous records for attendance, attracting some 2,300 to 2,400 people.

“We sold more of every product,” said Don Hasson, president. “People are feeling better about the economy, and when they feel better they buy more. That means dealers are buying products looking to the next six months rather than the next few weeks.”

Appliance parts distributor Marcone Canada hired Peter Szachlewicz as its first president. 

Marcone Supply, the company's U.S. counterpart, established a presence in Canada with its 2010 buyout of APWagner. Since that time, Marcone Canada has experienced growth in both its retail and wholesale operations, the company said, selling authorized OEM appliance parts, HVAC components and property maintenance supplies.

People were surprised that the doors, with their polished, wood-grained appearance, were made with the materials that they were, remarks Deke Welles on the company website (Deke is the son of founder David Welles and the former president of Therma-Tru).
