The latest study from The Freedonia Group pinpoints U.S. pipe demand at a high point of $63.5 billion in 2018, indicating a 7.3% annual growth rate.

The study, titled Plastic & Competitive Pipe, attributes the increase to growth in crude oil and natural gas activity, in which market pipe is frequently implicated.

Additionally, Freedonia predicts a rebound in building construction expenditures, with an emphasis on kitchen and bathroom renovations and conduit for nonresidential building construction.

It’s no longer simply considered the right thing to do. With a greater number of consumers, builders and retailers reaching for green products, manufacturing with an eye toward the environment also makes great business sense. The U.S. Green Building Council estimates that the number of LEED-certified homes doubled globally between 2011 and 2012. Ranging from such simple fixes as energy-efficient light bulbs to advanced implements like an Energy Star-rated clothes dryer, here are 14 innovative products from the tree-hugging corner of the home-building industry.

Citing an increasing demand for low-gloss hardwood floors in the U.S., Bellawood is adding prefinished oil-look matte styles to its product line.

According to the company, low-gloss floors are good for concealing minor scratches, dirt and fur, which is helping fuel the demand in homes with kids and pets.

Bellawood's new line achieves these results without the need to add a high-maintenance oil finish. Instead, the company uses a proprietary topcoat with a UV-cured aluminum oxide finish.

We’re going to start this in reverse, conclusion first. Value engineering hurts the dealer, the builder, the manufacturer and the industry. A little dramatic? I hope you’ll excuse me. After all, it’s Monday morning, and we have customers queued up asking how we can cut the price of their project. So we give them coffee, try to calm them down and explain that we won’t let them cut anything, for their sake, and really they should be adding.

Electric corded lawn mowers accounted for only 6% of the walk-behind market in 2010 — but that’s up from 2.9% in 2009, according to data from consumer research firm The NPD Group.

Listening to a company’s quarterly earnings conference can be the equivalent of watching a CEO read a PowerPoint presentation, followed by a group of analysts grilling him on EBIT margins, payout ratios and basis points. Or it can be like panning for gold, with nuggets surfacing about store openings and closings, new products launches, new accounts with retail customers or “terminated” relationships with former customers. Competitors even talk about each other — sometimes by name — with a little prompting from analysts.
