The Home Channel Hall of Fame will induct a new member in early May, as Orgill chairman, president and CEO Ron Beal joins the prestigious circle of industry leaders.

Beal will be inducted as part of the 2014 Golden Hammer Awards Ceremony slated for May 6 in Las Vegas during the National Hardware Show. 

The event’s sponsors are HCN and the National Hardware Show.

Taylor’s Do it Center of Virginia Beach, Va., celebrated the grand opening of its 11th store Saturday. 

The hardware store retailer’s newest store is in the Courthouse Marketplace shopping center in Virginia Beach. The store is the chain’s fifth in Virginia Beach.

 “It was an old fashioned grand opening with a board cutting, the mayor and chief of police,” said marketing manager Tom Townsend. The store’s soft opening took place in August.

The Shreveport Times reported that Centenary Hardware and Paint Co. is closing its doors.

The Louisiana business was established in 1947. Co-owners Bill and Charlotte Gates explained to the newspaper that the store’s inventory, after it is sold to a relative in the business, will fund their retirement.

Cleaning supplies and storage have become a separate category with their own dedicated buyer at Do it Best Corp., the Fort Wayne, Ind.-based co-op. Amanda Harmeyer, the organization’s former associate merchandise manager for housewares, has been promoted to merchandise manager for Cleaning Supplies and Storage, a newly created position.

A five-year veteran of Do it Best, Harmeyer previously worked in merchandising for two international retailers.

According to San Francisco's ABC7 News, Tuggy's Hardware, which opened in 1898, continues to advise customers on the art of home improvement in the Noe Valley neighborhood of San Francisco.

The article quotes Denny Giovanolli, who began working at Tuggy's when he was 12. One of the keys to the store's longevity, especially in an age of national chains, is its knowledge of local homes and the parts needed to keep them running.

According to an article in the Tampa Tribune, Harvey's Hardware celebrated its 50th anniversary over the weekend by playing to its strengths -- a niche market in knives.

The store in Land O' Lakes, Fla., held its annual Case & Sons Cutlery knife event, which also featured appearances from local veterans and a presentation from a Case historian.

The retailer describes itself as a classic hometown hardware store, according to the article.

Describing the 2011 National Hardware Show as a "near sold-out event," organizers said more than 500 new suppliers will be participating in the May 10-12 even in Las Vegas.

“We are excited at the depth of suppliers signed up for the 2011 National Hardware Show,” said Rich Russo, event director, National Hardware Show. “We will see more of the industry’s biggest brand names on the Show floor, including some that haven’t been with us in a few years.”

Valley Hardware, an 86-year-old hardware dealer in San Juan, Texas, closed its doors on Dec. 30, according to an article in The Monitor newspaper.

Mike Hempel, who owned Valley Hardware for 17 years, said business has been declining for the past six years, even since street repairs forced the store to close for six months. The opening of a nearby Lowe’ also eroded sales.
