Eagle Materials has agreed to acquire CRS Proppants LLC and its subsidiaries, including Great Northern Sand LLC, a supplier of northern-white frac-sand to the energy industry.

The acquisition, which comes at a cash purchase price of approximately $225 million, will add to Eagle's existing stake in the frac-sand market and double its frac-sand production capacity.

Dr. Shuji Nakamura, founder of LED technology company Soraa, has been awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics for his blue light emitting diode invention.

Nakamura, together with professors Dr. Steven DenBaars and Dr. James Speck, joined forces in 2007 to figure out how to bring GaN LED technology to the market, riding on the assumption that GaN LEDs would produce more light and be more cost-effective in that they wouldn't rely on foreign substrates like sapphire or silicon carbide.

The Obama administration announced last month that it would put $68 million in federal funding toward boosting renewable energy and the implementation of solar power in homes and businesses, particularly those in rural areas of the U.S.

The $68 million will go toward 540 energy-efficiency projects, 240 of which are solar energy initiatives.

The planned actions are projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 300 million metric tons by 2030 -- the equivalent of taking more than 60 million cars off the road for one year -- and to save $10 billion in energy costs.

A new report titled "Residential Energy Innovations" from Navigant Research is pointing to potential in the power generation market: specifically, $625 billion worth of it between 2014 and 2023.

According to the study, technological innovations (known as distributed energy resources, or DER) and new financing options will contribute to this boon.

These technologies include relatively established mainstays like solar panels, as well as up-and-coming innovations like residential combined heat and power.

Ace Hardware Corporation has employed the wares of Digital Lumens in upgrading the lighting of its 1-million-sq.-ft. Retail Support Center in Rocklin, California.

The facility has been outfitted in Digital Lumens Intelligent LED Lighting since October 2013, saving Ace an average of 81% on lighting-related energy use, the company said.

Composite Panel Building Systems (CPBS) has introduced Composite Structural Insulated Sheathing (C-SIS) to the market, a new eco-friendly fully composite sheathing for residential applications.

According to the company, C-SIS gets its energy-efficiency chops thanks to its fiberglass reinforced thermoset skin, which is bonded to the polyurethane foam insulation for added durability. The result is uninterrupted insulation, robust structural integrity, water-resistance and air-tight performance without the need for house wrap.

In advance of new federal efficiency standards for dryers set to take effect in 2015, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has handed the 2014 Energy Star Emerging Technology Award over to LG Electronics for its new EcoHybrid Heat Pump Dryer.

The EcoHybrid is described as the first dryer with heat pump technology to hit the market in the U.S., meaning it captures and recycles energy that's generated during the drying cycle. This translates to up to 50% more energy savings, according to third-party testing.

Universal Forest Products has a winner in its 2014 ProWood Desperate Deck Contest, a giveaway that promised a new custom-built deck to the person with the best "desperate deck" story.

Amy Spoonhower of Gordonsville, Virginia made the most compelling case. Together with her fiance, Spoonhower bought a moldy, leaky foreclosed house and worked on the fixer-upper for four years to restore it. However, the couple ran out of energy and money before they had a chance to touch up the decks, which were in a dismal state of disrepair.

Hardwood flooring company Lumber Liquidators has donated one of its Dura Dance flooring systems to the Cincinnati, Ohio-based Highsteppers Drill Team as part of its Lay It Forward charity campaign.

The 15-year-old drill team recently moved into a new space, but didn’t have a proper floor, which led to Lumber Liquidators installing the Dura Dance system, which features underlying rubber to reduce impact and absorb energy.

Muskegon, Michigan-based energy-efficient lighting company EarthTronics has named Tripp Smith to the post of VP sales. Smith brings over 30 years of lighting experience to bear on his new role, in which he will be charged with increasing sales opportunities and profit, as well as expanding market share in North America.

Over 22 years of his career were spent at GE Lighting, where he performed in various sales and leadership capacities in the company's retail and commercial lighting businesses.

Massachusetts-based lighting company Osram Sylvania announced that it would be expanding it’s lineup of LED light bulbs. This month, Lowe’s will start stocking the seven new bulbs.

Among the company’s new LED bulb offerings are the ones meant to replace 40- and 60-watt incandescent bulbs. The 60-watt LED bulb puts out the same amount of light as a 60-watt incandescent with 8.5 watts of electricity.

Between 2000 and 2010, Newman managed sales and operations for Genesis Insulation Inc./Energy Efficient Consulting. He also has additional administrative experience working for Cross-Man Holdings, where he was project manager for tenant improvement, and also provided budget management services.

KB Home is launching a pilot program for a set of new energy storage solutions, developed in collaboration with SunPower Corp., in its Irvine, El Dorado Hills and San Diego markets.

The new high-efficiency solar power systems store solar energy by day and offer an alternative energy source for use during power outages or other situations.
