Lebhar-Friedman's Residential Products Group announced the hiring of  Steph Koyfman as associate editor for HCN and HCN Daily.

Koyfman, who previously woked as copywriter and community manager for Lookboard, a B2B e-commerce startup, will cover home improvement with an emphasis on hardware store retailing. She also served as an international intern for Rolling Stone Magazine in Madrid, Spain.

"HCN has given me the opportunity to pursue "real" journalism, and I'm happy to be on the right career track with a great team of people," Koyfman said.

Pound for pound, it's one of the most valuable reads in home improvement. The Home Improvement Research Institute's (HIRI's) Reference Guide weighs in at 238 10-in.-by-7-in. pages.

The 2013 edition (with a cover price tag of $495, but free for HIRI members) is loaded with the foundation blocks of industry marketing plans — from percent of consumers who bought glue guns as a replacement of an existing product (52%, page 48) to the average price of landscaping and sodding a new house ($6,491, page 210.)

Americans are correct to question laws that are packaged in ways that seem too good to be true. For instance: "No Child Left Behind Act" or the "Affordable Care Act." My personal suggestion is: "Strengthening America through higher pay for Editorial Writers Act."

Who could be against those?

Between the North and South halls, New Product World and Inventors Spotlight, attendees at the 2012 National Hardware Show were once again presented with the fruits of innovation derived from hours of toil in garage workshops and corporate labs. It’s always hard to pick just a few favorites; the only way to see them all is to wander the aisles, shake your head, and say, “Why didn’t somebody think of that before?”

The other day, an HCN editor received an email from Cambridge -- the one in England. A senior analyst and Ph.D. was asking for an example of an adhesive, paint or sealant product that has “transformed the market.”

Two thoughts came to mind.

Here’s an actual email from Home Channel News freelance editor Ken Ryan, after he completed research and writing duties for our “Second Annual Hardware All-Stars: Fifty Stores in Fifty States” project:

“Thanks for the assignment. It was fun to do.”

Fun? That guy has a great attitude, because we didn’t make it easy on him — or any of the other editors working on the project.

While attending a meeting with the Home Improvement Research Institute, a Home Channel News editor made a side trip to another important South Florida institution that could help us all better understand our industry.

This institution is called The Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg. (Note to accounting: The $10 admission ticket and $3 parking are now officially “business related.”) And it does so by preparing us for the surreal in our world.

Back in August 2006, this “From the Editor” page was dedicated in part to an examination of Star and Bullock Hardware, the fictitious, gold-rush era building supply store from the HBO Series “Deadwood.”

At the time, some suggested that I was watching too much television.

But now look at page 30 of this magazine. There’s an actual, real-life Deadwood, S.D., hardware store on our Fifty Hardware All Stars list: Twin City Hardware.

One of the lessons of legislative lobbying is this: If you’re not in front of lawmakers with your message, somebody else is.

Operating under that theory, and armed with position papers and talking points, lumberyard executives and members of the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association (NLBMDA) descended on the halls of power in Washington, D.C., last month for the group’s annual Legislative Conference, parts of which were co-hosted with the Windows and Doors Manufacturers Association (WDMA).

“Regarding 'An interview with Manufacturer X' -- I chuckled to myself when I read this recent anonymous interview. My first question to Mr. X: Why the anonymity? Embarrassed that you probably shipped hundreds of jobs to a Communist regime bent on destroying the West and dominating the world? Strengthening a financial system already holding trillions of dollars of American debt and wielding it as a threat in negotiations with the U.S. government?
