Home Depot’s Marvin Ellison will leave the world’s largest home improvement retailer to take the top spot at Plano, Texas-based J.C. Penney. 

Ellison is currently executive VP stores at The Home Depot.

Christopher Cook has been elected as the newest member of Tile Shop Holdings' board of directors, effective Sept. 22, 2014.

"Chris is a great addition to The Tile Shop's board of directors," said chairman William Watts. "His experience and leadership in establishing and growing a successful retail business will be a great asset as The Tile Shop continues to expand."

Cook is a founder of Texas-based mattress retailer Sleep Experts, where he served as CEO from 2004 until April of this year, when it was acquired by Mattress Firm.

The National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI) pointed to a significant milestone for builder confidence, which reached its highest level since November 2005 this month.

Confidence in the market for new, single-family homes reached 59 in September, a four-point gain since August.

[The news followed shortly after the Commerce Department reported August housing starts fell sharply from the prior month.]

Julie Lyle, chief marketing officer for Indianapolis appliance, electronics and furniture retailer hhgregg, has been named the 2015 chairperson for the Global Retail Marketing Association (GRMA) Advisory Board.

As chairperson, Lyle will lead the GRMA Advisory Board and play a key role in the development of the organization’s strategic initiatives and thought leadership. Lyle succeeds Brian Beitler, EVP and chief marketing officer, David’s Bridal, who served as chairman from 2012 to 2014.

A report from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) states that the second quarter saw an increase in remodeling market indicators.

The 2014 Remodeling Business Pulse (RBP) survey demonstrated growth compared to conditions in March, at which time market indicators had just declined.

On a scale of 1 to 9 -- where 1 is "much worse than a year ago," 5 is "about the same as last year" and 9 is "much better," -- current business conditions increased from 6.07 to 6.29.

The Indiana Lumber & Builder’s Supply Association will host the 20th Sycamore Scramble Aug. 7 at Oak Tree Golf Course in Plainfield, Indiana.

This event benefits the Blair F. Collings Scholarship Program, which is one of the largest single scholarship granting programs in the LBM industry. 

The scholarship program is named to honor the memory of Blair Collings, the son of Ferguson Lumber owner Joe Collings, a past chairman of the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association.

The board of directors at Vulcan Materials Company has named Thomas Hill as its new president and CEO. He has also been elected as the company's newest board member.

In his new role, Hill will take the place of Donald James, who will remain on board as executive chairman. Hill was most recently serving as EVP and COO.

Oak Brook, Illinois-based Ace Hardware Corporation made some updates to its corporate board of directors, not the least of which includes the planned appointment of Jim Ackroyd as chairman.

Ackroyd is the CEO of Vision Ace Hardware, an 11-store chain in southwest Florida. He was named vice chairman last year as part of a planned changeover within the chairman position. As a member of Ace's board since 2008, he was also re-elected to another three-year term as a member director.

Vancouver, British Columbia-based Nuheat appointed president Kevin McElroy to president and CEO.

“The board made the decision to add the designation of CEO to Kevin’s title after a review of his performance during his first year as president,” said Neil Johansen, chairman of Nuheat's board of directors.

Nuheat manufactures and distributes electric floor heating systems and freeze protection products.

Following news this week that Rayonier made its official spinoff of its Performance Fibers business, new boardmembers were selected for both Rayonier Inc. and the newly formed Rayonier Advanced Materials Inc.

Cemex has announced two successors to the late Lorenzo Zambrano's title as chairman and CEO of the company.

The board has unanimously appointed director Rogelio Zambrano as chairman and former EVP finance and administration Fernando Gonzalez as CEO, effective immediately.

The move came swiftly after the passing of longtime chairman and CEO Lorenzo Zambrano, who died unexpectedly on Monday during a business trip in Madrid.

David Nunes is leaving his post as president and CEO of Pope Resources in order to take the helm of Rayonier, Inc. when the company eventually splits later this year. For now, however, he's onboarding as Rayonier's COO.

Effective June 9, Nunes will assume his interim role, in which he will be tasked with helping to finalize the separation of the company.

Bill Adams, founder and chairman of Adams Manufacturing, has been honored with the 2014 Inventor of the Year Award from the Pittsburgh Intellectual Property Law Association (PIPLA).

Adams took home the top honor this year due to his innovations in the design of suction cups, outdoor resin furniture, holiday accessories and other consumer products. It's also a nod to the significant economic impact he has made on the western Pennsylvania region and American manufacturing as a whole.

Lumber Liquidators is getting ready to launch its 11th annual April Sale, which began as a "Black Friday" tradition associated with tax season.

"It's not by chance that our big sale is in April," said founder and chairman Tom Sullivan. "In 2004, my accountant came to me and warned that we needed to pay taxes by April 15th and that we were not going to have enough funds, so we quickly put together a huge sale to offer our overstock hardwood flooring at incredible prices. Former Stanley Black & Decker chairman Nolan Archibald, who retired from the company in March of last year, received a compensation package totaling approximately $133 million last year, according to an annual proxy SEC filing the company published on Tuesday.

A $51.4 million merger bonus contributed to the unusually high payout, which was "based on the annual run-rate of cost savings achieved by the company" as of his retirement that were attributable to the merger of Stanley and Black & Decker in 2010.
