Whirlpool reported record earnings in 2013 for the full-year and three months ended Dec. 31, with net earnings more than doubling over 2012.

2013's net earnings of $827 million more than doubled 2012's $401 million. Additionally, fourth-quarter earnings of $181 million were 48.4% above year-ago figures.

Overall, net sales for the appliance manufacturer were $18.8 billion for the year -- a 3.5% improvement -- and $5.09 billion for the quarter, up 6.2% year-over-year.

Samsung has set its sights on a fairly ambitious goal: to become the world's largest appliance manufacturer by 2015.

According to Bloomberg Businessweek, Samsung has some pretty formidable competition here in the U.S., including current leader Whirlpool. However, it's the fast-growing appliance brand in the country, managing to jump from 2.3% market share to 10.5% over the last five years.

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation has released its Corporate Equality Index for 2014, which recognizes several names in the residential building and home improvement industry for their commitment to workplace equality for LGBT employees.

This year, a record 304 companies -- in various industries and parts of the country -- earned a top score of 100%.

Included in that cadre are 3M, Clorox, Owens Corning, Sears Holdings and Whirlpool.

Whirlpool reported third-quarter net earnings of $196 million for the quarter, compared with net earnings of $74 million, reported during the same period last year. 

Sales in the quarter were $4.7 billion compared with $4.5 billion reported during the same period last year. Excluding the impact of foreign currency and Brazilian tax credits, sales increased more than 5%, led by strong growth in North America.

Whirlpool is coming out with an induction double oven freestanding range, designed to offer innovations in cooking consistency and efficient cooking technology.

The Whirlpool Induction oven includes special features such as its AccuHeat induction technology, which heats the magnetic cookware directly without warming the cooktop. Meanwhile, TimeSavor convection cooking distributes hot air more efficiently to seal in flavors.

Whirlpool has entered into agreements to become a majority shareholder in Hefei Rongshida Sanyo Electric Co., a leading home appliances manufacturer based in Hefei, China.

Through this transaction, a Whirlpool subsidiary will acquire all shares currently owned by Sanyo Electric Co. and Sanyo Electric Co. (China), and purchase new Hefei Sanyo shares via a private placement.

The NKBA Design Trends Survey, which asked designers for the total average cost of the kitchens they design, slipped in the 2013 survey to $47,308. That's down from 2012, but is well ahead of 2010 and 2011 (See chart).

Whirlpool North America, a division of Whirlpool Corp., reported second-quarter sales of $2.5 billion, a 4% increase over its sales in the second quarter of 2011. Overall, North America unit shipments decreased approximately 2%, the company said, with its unit shipments of major appliances to the United States increasing approximately 1%.

Home Depot has announced the expansion of its major appliance brands by adding Whirlpool, Electrolux and Frigidaire in a limited number of stores and on Homedepot.com.

The appliances will be available through the company's Depot Direct delivery network and available to be ordered in all U.S. stores. Depot Direct includes more than 3,000 appliances delivered and installed to the customer's home within one to five days of purchase. Appliance purchases through Depot Direct include free delivery and haul-away.

In a victory for foreign-based manufacturers, the U.S. International Trade Commission has ruled that LG Electronics and its affiliates were not guilty of “dumping” certain refrigerator models on the U.S. market. The 5-0 vote ended a year-old investigation initiated by Whirlpool, which claimed that bottom-mount refrigerators made in Mexico and Korea were sold in the United States at below market value.

In a preliminary finding, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) has sided with Whirlpool in its anti-dumping petition against Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics. The Benton Harbor, Mich., manufacturer claims it is being harmed by Samsung and LG, which are selling washers made in South Korea and Mexico at below fair value.
