Both sides of a West Coast labor dispute are entering extra time as the contract between the Pacific Maritime Association and the International Long Shore and Warehouse Union officially expired June 30.

As expected, both sides are negotiating in an effort to avoid the economic damage from a costly strike on the docks that, according to a recent study, could cost as much as $2.5 billion per day.

Kelly Kolb, VP government affairs of the Arlington, Virginia-based Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA), made a statement on behalf of the organization regarding union contract negotiations at West Coast ports.

With the deadline to resolve the negotiations drawing near, RILA said its priority was to avoid work stoppage and to keep supply chains functioning as usual.

Tampa, Florida-based VOLT Lighting, a direct-to-consumer e-commerce lighting manufacturer, is making moves on the West Coast via the opening of a new distribution center in Las Vegas.

The new facility, which is fully stocked and staffed, will make 1- to 3-day ground shipping possible for the company's West Coast customers.

San Jose, California-based Orchard Supply Hardware president Richard Maltsbarger said the future looks bright for the West Coast chain, especially after a $20 million investment in Northern California stores.

The investment includes a complete rebuild of the Orchard Supply Hardware San Jose – Midtown, which will serve as the flagship of the 73-store chain that stretches from Portland, Oregon, to Southern California.

WOLF has cemented a new distribution partnership with Tacoma, Washington-based Capital Lumber, extending its reach to the West Coast for the first time.

Capital Lumber will distribute WOLF's PVC Decking and Capped Composite Decking deckboards in Washington, Alaska and Hawaii.

Import volume at the nation’s major retail container ports is expected to increase 3.5% in May as negotiators prepare to begin talks on a new contract for West Coast dockworkers, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.

Continuing its hot acquisition streak, Green Bay, Wisconsin-based US LBM launched a West Coast operation, expanding its number of LBM divisions to 12.

The National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association convention was held in Washington DC on March 31 thru April 2. I was in attendance with my fun and beautiful wife Melinda Ganahl. After I took the role of the WCLBMA President in late 2013, [WCLBMA Executive Director] Ken Dunham and I discussed the various duties I needed to perform. On that list was attending the National Legislative Conference in DC. The purpose of my being there was to represent our West Coast interests.

KB Home posted a strong first quarter in 2014, with revenues up 11% and positive net income that swung from a 2013 first-quarter loss.

Sales for the three months ended Feb. 28 were $450.7 million, up from $405.2 million in the year-ago quarter.

The increase was fueled by activity in the Southwest and Southeast regions and was offset by a decrease in the West Coast area. Additionally, the average selling price rose 12% since last year.

Among the new distributors are Huttig Building Products in Phoenix, Nashville, and Jackson, Miss.; BlueLinx in Tampa, Miami and Jacksonville, Fla.; Dixie Plywood and Lumber Company in San Antonio, Houston and Dallas; Universal Forest Products in Thornton and Riverside, Calif.; and Intermountain Supply in Spokane, Wash.

The West Coast Lumber & Building Material Association (WCLBMA) has elected officers and directors for 2014, including Mark Ganahl as president. 

Ganahl is VP of Ganahl Lumber and general manager of the company’s Anaheim, Calif., location. Ganahl Lumber is the state’s oldest lumberyard, with a history that dates back to 1884. Today Ganahl Lumber has nine locations in Southern California.

LP Building Products has released the new LP SolidStart LPI 530 I-Joist in the West Coast region.

The I-Joist is bolstered by an LP SolidStart LVL flange -- 1-5/16 in. x 2-1/16 in. (53mm) wide -- for optimal load bearing capacity and performance, making it less likely to split, shrink, twist, warp or bow than solid sawn lumber. The flange is available in depths ranging from 9-1/2 in. to 16 in.

It was here in 2007, under a sunny San Diego sky, that we recognized Augie Venezia and Fairfax Lumber as the 2007 Independent Pro Dealer of the Year.

We have followed Venezia’s subsequent career with keen interest, and have applauded his handling of regulatory storm clouds. This last one is a whopper.

Moorsesville, N.C.-based Lowe's said it expects to complete its West Coast acquisition of 72 Orchard Supply Hardware stores by the end of August. When that happens, current CEO Mark Baker will be replaced at the helm of Orchard Supply by Lowe's executive Richard D. Maltsbarger, the retailer announced yesterday.

Tool manufacturer MAX USA hired Bruce Kennedy as West Coast regional sales manager.

Kennedy’s career includes 21 years experience in sales and operations, most recently in building materials distribution focused on pneumatic tools, compressors and accessories and collated fasteners. In his career he has worked for business-to-business and business-to-consumer companies in inside and outside sales, purchasing and inventory management and other disciplines. He is in the Los Angeles area.

Temperatures in July 2013 will be much cooler than last year across the North Central United States, and retailers are going to feel the impact.

That's part of the forecast from Bethlehem, Pa.-based Weather Trends International.

While temperatures frequently crested the 100-degree mark last year, temperatures will be even warmer than last year in the South and along the West Coast.

In the East Coast, residents can expect weather that's warmer than normal, but cooler than a year ago, according to the Weather Trends forecast.

Boral TruExterior Trim, a building product in the poly-ash category of trim, has announced a new distribution agreement with Capital Lumber, a distributor of specialty building materials serving the western United States.
