Jerry Howard, CEO the National Association of Home Builders, will speak at the Spring Meeting & Legislative Conference. He will join Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) at the Washington Briefing Breakfast April 1.

Howard has worked as a legislative analyst at the National Association of Realtors, the chief lobbyist for the National Council of State Housing Agencies, and tax counsel  for the NAHB. He was promoted to NAHB's executive VP and CEO in February 2001.

Pope Resources has announced a $6.8 million sale to Richmond-American Homes, which involves 63 single-family lots in the northern portion of the Partnership's Harbor Hill project in Gig Harbor, Wash.

"This is the second bulk sale of fully developed single-family lots we have closed on thus far this quarter," said David L. Nunes, president and CEO. "We look forward to additional residential lot sales from our Harbor Hill project over the coming months and years as the project matures and enjoys increased interest from merchant builders."

MoistureShield, the Springdale, Ark.-based composite decking manufacturer, has expanded its presence in the Sunbelt and West Coast regions by adding 12 new distribution locations to its network.

Among the new distributors are Huttig Building Products in Phoenix, Nashville, and Jackson, Miss.; BlueLinx in Tampa, Miami and Jacksonville, Fla.; Dixie Plywood and Lumber Company in San Antonio, Houston and Dallas; Universal Forest Products in Thornton and Riverside, Calif.; and Intermountain Supply in Spokane, Wash.

Port Washington, N.Y.- based distributor PACOA reported a 10% increase in attendance and sales at its Annual Spring Dealer Market in Queens, N.Y.

More than 50 new dealers attended the show, which concluded March 9. Dealers were able to take advantage of great savings through the new “Door Buster” promotions, which provided deep discounts on top-selling items only available for attending dealers, the company said.

Port Washington N.Y.-based wholesale distributor PACOA will be joining Distribution America. PACOA serves independent hardware, paint and lumber retailers throughout much of New York, New England, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. 

Distribution America’s board of directors voted unanimously on the addition. Recently, Distribution America lost Emery-Waterhouse to Ace Hardware.

Federal Way, Wash.-based Weyerhaeuser posted net earnings of $540 million for the full year 2013, up from $385 million in 2012. 

Net sales for the year were $8.5 billion, up from $7.1 billion in 2012.

The company noted that in 2013 it doubled earnings before special items, increased its per share dividend by nearly 30% and announced a deal to combine its real estate operation with TRI Pointe Homes. It also acquired about 645,000 acres of timberlands in the Pacific Northwest through the purchase of Longview Timber.

According to multiple media reports, the federal raid on two of Lumber Liquidators' Virginia locations last month has been linked to the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA).

The Washington-based environmental advocacy group spent three years mounting its case against the retailer, claiming it purchased wood from protected forests in eastern Russia through a Chinese-owned supplier. The forests in question are home to the endangered Siberian tiger.

SAN ANTONIO — Doug Miller has taken the reins of Handy Hardware at a critical juncture. The last several months have seen the failure of a distribution center, bankruptcy proceedings, loss of member equity and a private equity takeover.

Into the fray jumps Miller, an executive who grew up in the hardware business (his dad owned a store) and never left it. Miller retired from Spokane, Wash.-based Jensen Distribution at the end of last year, and came out of retirement to lead Handy.

Washington, D.C - Import volume at the nation’s major retail container ports is expected to grow 5.1% in September over the same month last year as retailers head into the holiday season. U.S. ports followed by the monthly Global Port Tracker report released today by the NRF and Hackett Associates handled 1.43 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) in July, the latest month for which after-the-fact numbers are available.

The company, which recently added 645,000 acres of forestland to its portfolio in Washington and Oregon, now manages 20.5 million acres of forestland in the U.S. and Canada that's been certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative standard.
