USG Corp.’s Sheetrock Ultralight panels are available at Home Depot stores nationwide, according to blog site JetsonGreen.com. The product, first tested in 2010, weighs anywhere from 15 to 24 lbs. less than typical gypsum board, depending on the size. It can be used with a 40% lighter joint compound released in January 2012.

Atlanta-based Home Depot made first-quarter history for the period ended April 29 with net earnings crossing the $1 billion mark.

The company reported net income of $1.035 billion, up 27.5% from the same quarter last year. Sales were also up, rising 5.9% to $17.81 billion in the quarter. Comparable-store sales were 5.8%, the highest figure in more than seven years.

Hannah brings more than 20 years of finance, operations and audit experience from a wide range of companies that include General Electric, Boeing and The Home Depot. He will report to chief operating officer Mike Kramer.

Ken Langone, one of the co-founders of Home Depot, will be awarded the 2012 Horatio Alger Award on April 13 in a ceremony in Washington, D.C. Langone will be one of 12 recipients, along with former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and Robert Miller, CEO of Albertson's supermarkets, to receive the prestigious medallion.

A case that started with a group of Home Depot customers reporting two suspected shoplifters in Beaverton, Ore., has produced its first conviction. William Hazelwood, 35, pled guilty to one count of first degree theft and was sentenced to 1.5 years of probation and ordered to pay attorney fees, plus an assessment and surcharge, according to an article in The Oregonian.

A San-Diego area man will be sentenced to seven years and four months in prison after pleading guilty to nine felonies that include making fraudulent purchases at Home Depot stores. According to a story reported by the City News Service, Joel Booth, age 39, used counterfeit checks and identification cards to purchase items at a number of Home Depot stores in San Diego and Riverside counties. Police investigators nicknamed him “The Homer Bandit,” after Home Depot’s original mascot.

The database is a special “microsite” within homedepot.com that features products geared toward green home building, many of which may contribute toward earning LEED points and prerequisites for the LEED for Homes program, making it easier for homeowners and builders to find the products they need, according to the joint press release.

The Home Depot and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia extended their agreement to offer Martha Stewart Living branded products in The Home Depot's 2,000-plus stores through March 2016.

The agreement also calls for an expansion of products offered. 

The Martha Stewart Living line, launched in January 2010, is available in categories such as interior and project paint, outdoor furniture, kitchen cabinetry, carpeting and bath vanities.  The new agreement will include these categories plus a new craft furniture line as well as a broader array of holiday merchandise.

The Home Depot this week announced fourth-quarter sales of $16 billion, a 5.9% increase over the same quarter last year. What happened? From Craig Menear's perspective, the answer involves execution, warm weather and strength in maintenance and repair categories.
