Marking the one-year anniversary of the April 16 tornado that destroyed the retailers Sanford, N.C., store, Lowe’s today launched a “Give Back. Pay it Forward” event with American Red Cross.

From April 13-17, Lowe’s has set up collection areas in Sanford and online so people can donate to the relief organization. The American Red Cross will also host a blood drive on April 16 at the store.

Belgrade, Maine-based Hammond Lumber Co. will acquire three building material stores located in Damariscotta, Boothbay Harbor and Pemaquid, from Sanford, Maine-based New England Building Materials.

The move brings the 58-year-old Hammond Lumber footprint from nine Maine locations to 12.

Lowe’s of Sanford, N.C., which was devastated by a tornado on April 16, is planning a special reopening ceremony Thursday, Sept. 8.

Joining local and corporate officials at the site will be Nascar driver Jimmie Johnson, gospel music singer and radio host Yolanda Adams and music legends Chairmen of the Board.

Also on hand will be Mike Hollowell, the store manager who was credited for his clear leadership during the disaster.

A Lowe’s store destroyed by a tornado on April 16 will reopen this fall, a week ahead of schedule. The Sanford, N.C., location, which has roughly 160 employees, was expected to reopen on Sept. 15, officials said at a city meeting last week. However, company officials announced Tuesday evening that the store would instead reopen on Sept. 8.

Both stores are undergoing repairs after a tornado swept through town and caused major damage to the businesses on April 16.

Lowe's will break ground today on a new Sanford, N.C., store to replace the one destroyed by a tornado more than a month ago, according to press reports.

The 103,000- sq.-ft. store is expected to be completed by September.

Five individuals dressed in black and carrying flashlights and burglary tools were arrested April 19 outside the North Carolina Lowe’s store damaged by a tornado, according to an article in the Sanford Herald.

As a state of emergency is declared in North Carolina, homeowners and retailers are picking up the pieces after a destructive and deadly series of tornadoes.

According to news reports, 243 tornadoes were reported in 13 states in the past three days.

Sanford Sigoloff, a turnaround specialist who worked for Wickes and Builders Emporium, died of complications of pneumonia in his home in Brentwood, Calif., on Feb. 19, according to an obituary in the New York Times. He was 80 years old and also suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.
