Masco Corp. has reported net sales of $1.87 billion for its first fiscal quarter, an increase of 7% over sales of $1.75 billion in the first quarter of 2011.

North American sales increased 9% and international sales increased 1%. In local currencies, international sales increased 5% compared with the first quarter of 2011.

Net income for the quarter, which ended March 31, was $33 million, compared with a net loss of $46 million a year ago.

Central Garden & Pet reported second-quarter net sales of $466.9 million, down 4% from  $485.7 million in the same period a year ago. Net income for the quarter ended March 24 totaled $21.6 million, compared with net income of $31.8 million in the second quarter of 2011.

A. O. Smith Corp. has posted first-quarter net earnings of $47.5 million, compared with $24.2 million in the prior-year quarter. Net earnings included an after-tax gain of $16.7 million, related to the sale of shares of Regal Beloit Corporation, which were received from the 2011 divestiture of the electric motor business.

Simpson Manufacturing has reported income, net of tax, of $7.2 million for the first quarter of 2012 compared with income of $7.1 million in the first quarter of 2011.

Net sales for the quarter increased 19.8% to $158.7 million compared with net sales of $132.5 million in the year-ago period.

A mild spring of weather conducive to farm and ranch sales propelled Tractor Supply Corp. to a strong first quarter.

The Brentwood, Tenn.-based farm and ranch retailer saw same-store sales increase 11.5% in the first quarter ended March 31. Net sales increased 22.0% to $1.02 billion.

Net income for the quarter was $40.3 million, compared to net income of $18.3 million in the same quarter last year.

Sherwin-Williams Co. reported net sales of $2.14 billion for its first fiscal quarter, a 15.1% rise over net sales in the same quarter of 2011. The increase was attributed primarily to higher paint sales volume and selling price increases.

According to an article in The Globe and Mail, sales of British Columbia lumber to China have declined dramatically -- a major reversal from the strong sales of 2011. 

Analysts continue to expect more growth in 2012, but Statistics Canada estimated a mere $67 million in B.C.-to-China lumber sales in December, down 36% from the same month in the previous year.

Masco Corp. reported net sales of $7.46 billion for fiscal 2011, relatively flat compared with sales of $7.48 billion in 2010. North American sales decreased 3% and international sales increased 8% compared with 2010, the company said. In local currencies, international sales increased 3% compared with 2010.

The Taylor, Mich., corporation posted a net loss of $575 million for its 2011 fiscal year, compared with $1.04 billion during fiscal 2010.

Paint manufacturer Valspar reported first-quarter sales of $885.6 million, a 5.1% increase from the first quarter of 2011. Net income for the first quarter, which ended Jan. 27, was $55.8 million, compared with net income of $33.4 million in the same quarter a year ago.

Sales of new single-family houses in December fell to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 307,000, down 2.2% from the revised November rate of 314,000. 

Compared with a year ago, December new housing sales were down 7.3%, according to the U.S. Commerce Department's new residential sales report released Thursday.

BrassCraft Manufacturing, a division of Masco, has promoted George Werner to the position of VP retail sales. In this position, Werner will direct retail sales strategies and initiatives in support of BrassCraft Manufacturing's business goals and sales targets. In addition to all retail sales, with the exception of The Home Depot, Werner's responsibilities include the retail and wholesale segments of business for BrassCraft service parts and Cobra products.

Knipex Tools has announced the promotion of Todd Shumate from the position of sales manager to VP sales, North America. All field operations will report directly to Shumate, including channel managers, regional managers and the KTLP nationwide manufacturers' representative network.

Prior to joining the Arlington Heights, Ill., company in 2008, Shumate held regional sales manager positions at Minerallac/Cully, Progress Lighting/Hubbell Lighting and Klein Tools. He also held management roles at Dalloz Safety and Chase Ergonomics.

Syracuse, Ind.-based Poly-Wood Inc., a manufacturer of high-performance, eco-friendly casual outdoor furniture, announced the recent promotion of Chad Yordy to VP sales and marketing. 

Yordy initially joined Poly-Wood in 2006 as director of sales for the contract division. In his new position, Yordy, who will continue to be responsible for the expansion of sales and distribution channels, also will coordinate the company’s growth strategies.

Central Garden & Pet, a leading supplier of seeds, pottery, insecticides and other outdoor living products, reported net sales for its fourth fiscal quarter of $376.9 million, a 9% increase over the comparable period in fiscal 2010. The company's operating loss was $4.6 million for both the fourth quarter of 2011 and 2010.

Sales gains were driven by the garden products segment, which reported net sales for the quarter of $165.1 million, a gain of 24% over the fourth quarter of 2010.

Atlanta-based Home Depot's wind-and-storm aided sales effort in the third quarter presented several category highlights, according to executive VP merchandising Craig Menear.

The company's strong third-quarter performance, which included a 13% net earnings increase and comp-store sales of positive 4.2%, included strength "in the core of the store" and growth in average ticket and transactions.

Sales of new single-family houses in August 2011 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 295,000, according to estimates released jointly by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The figure is 2.3% below the revised July rate of 302,000, but is 6.1% above the August 2010 estimate of 278,000.

The median sales price of new houses sold in August 2011 was $209,100; the average sales price was $246,000.

Anderson, S.C.-based Delta Power Equipment Corp. named four regional sales managers: Joe Brakhage, Northeast, Rick Carr, Midwest; Dennis Mickelson, Western; and Curt Thomas, Southeastern.

Carr started with Rockwell International’s power tool division in 1977 as a district sales manager and worked his way up through the Pentair Tool Group to become hardware channel national accounts manager from 1999 to 2003 with responsibilities for a number of their brands, including Delta. Most recently, he was hardware channel national accounts manager with Senco Brands.

Pleasanton, Calif.-based Simpson Manufacturing Co. reported second-quarter net sales increased 7.4% to $177.8 million, up from $165.6 million in the same quarter last year. 

Net income was $19.5 million, up from $6.7 million in the same quarter last year. 

Sales increased in the United States, with increases in California and the western, midwestern and southeastern regions, as compared with the second quarter of 2010. Sales in the northeastern region decreased slightly.

Sales of new single-family houses in June 2011 slipped 1.0% compared with the previous month, according to an estimate released today by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. 

New residential sales in June 2011 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 312,000, down from the revised May rate of 315,000. Compared with June 2010, housing sales were up 1.6%.

The median sales price of new houses sold in June 2011 was $235,200; the average sales price was $269,000.

Builders FirstSource, one of the industry’s largest pro dealers, reported $206.4 million in sales for the second quarter of 2011, a decrease of 2.4% over sales of $211.5 million in the second quarter a year ago. The company attributed the decline to commodity price deflation, which was partially offset by a slight increase in sales volume, the company said.

Net loss for the Dallas-based LBM chain was $15.5 million, compared with a net loss of $19 million in the corresponding period of 2010.
