Here are three lessons learned from the West Coast storms this week: When it rains, it pours. Better safe than sorry. And retail is detail.

In the San Francisco Bay area and Silicon Valley, Eric Hassett of Hassett Ace Hardware came to grips with all three lessons during the state’s headline-grabbing deluge. There were reports of 12 inches falling overnight in some counties -- high winds, widespread power outages and fears of mudslides.

In the month of November, NAICS 444 businesses – building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers – showed 1.4% month-to-month gains on an adjusted basis, and 7.8% gains compared to a year ago.

The U.S. Department of Labor announced that unemployment held steady at 5.8% in November, with the economy adding 321,000 jobs for the month. This is well above the year's 224,000-jobs-per-month average.

Construction employment also continued to trend up in November (up 20,000). Employment in specialty trade contractors rose by 21,000, mostly in the residential component. Over the past 12 months, construction has added 213,000 jobs, with just over half the gain among specialty trade contractors.

All 14 regions of the Lowe’s empire achieved positive comp-store sales in the third quarter as the company remains “cautiously optimistic about the home improvement landscape.” 

Top sellers at Lowe’s in the period that saw 5.1% comp-store sales: outdoor power equipment, with double-digit comps, said Michael Jones, chief customer officer for the Mooresville, North Carolina-based retail giant.

When it comes to Black Friday lines and store hours on Thanksgiving, there's one age group in particular that's more likely to support mixing retail and holiday time.

Two new studies have found that Millennials are less likely to be miffed by a daunting shopping environment on Black Friday, and they're more likely to be okay with stores being open on Thanksgiving.

According to a recent hhgregg-commissioned survey of 3,500 shoppers in the U.S., Millennials are much more likely than Boomers to head to the stores on Black Friday (63% vs. 40%).

At $444.5 billion, retail sales recovered much of the ground lost in September, increasing 0.3% for the month and 4.1% since October 2013.

The better-than-expected pickup last month is contextualized by dramatically lower gas prices and record post-recession highs for consumer confidence.

Retail trade sales (not counting food services) were also up 0.3% since September and 3.8% since last year. Nonstore retailers saw considerably more progress at a yearly increase of 9.1%, while auto and motor vehicle dealers were up 8.3%.

The national unemployment rate dropped even further in October to 5.8%, given the addition of 214,000 new jobs to the economy.

The number of unemployed persons also dropped in October to 9.0 million. That figure has declined by 1.2 million since the beginning of this year.

However, many crucial metrics -- such as the number of long-term unemployed, those employed part-\ time for economic reasons, those marginally attached to the labor force and discouraged workers -- saw little progress. The civilian labor force participation rate was relatively flat at 62.8% in October.

Lowe's Innovation Labs will introduce two autonomous retail service robots in an Orchard Supply Hardware store in midtown San Jose, California, during the upcoming holiday season to study how robotics technology can benefit customers and employees. Called OSHbot, the robots will assist customers to navigate stores by directing them to specific products and providing real-time information about product promotions and inventory.
