The National Retail Federation today lowered its retail sales forecast for 2014 because of slow growth recorded during the first half of the year, but said sales are expected to grow significantly faster over the next five months. NRF forecasted in January that retail sales would grow 4.1% in 2014 over 2013, but today’s revision lowers the forecast to 3.6%.

Existing-home sales broke the 5-million benchmark in June, rising 2.6% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.04 million units sold, according to the National Association of Realtors.

June's figure is in comparison to an upwardly revised 4.91 million unit rate in May, reaching their highest pace since October 2013. However, they're still 2.3% below last year's number.

Housing starts dropped for the second month in a row in June, this time even more sharply -- at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 893,000, starts were down 9.3% from May's downwardly revised rate of 985,000.

The decrease rode almost entirely on the back of the southern United States, which dropped 29.6% since May. Every other region of the country posted increases, led by a 28.1% gain in the Midwest.

U.S. retail sales went up 0.2% in June to a total of $439.9 billion for the month, according to data released today by the U.S. Census Bureau. Though the growth fell below many economists' expectations, June's activity still pointed to a strengthening economy, with sales that were up 4.3% year-over-year.

Retail trade sales (not counting food service) fared slightly better -- up 0.3% since May. Nonstore retailers were up 8.1% year-over-year, and health and personal care stores were up 7.9% since 2013.

Uncertainty at the West Coast ports has caused a rush of activity, according to a monthly tracking service.

Import volume at major U.S. container ports is expected to total 1.5 million containers this month, says the Global Port Tracker from the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates. That’s the highest monthly volume in at least five years and follows a trend of unusually high import levels that began this spring as labor strife pushed retailers to import merchandise ahead of any potential problems.
