Garden Grove, Calif.-based Earth Friendly Products, the manufacturer of ECOS laundry detergent and other all-natural cleaning products, is increasing its minimum wage to $17 per hour in honor of Earth Day this year.

Additionally, the company will continue providing a bonus worth one week's pay for both Earth Day and Labor Day to all employees.

The move backs the company's ideal of a sustainable, fair and responsible work environment, first established by founder Van Vlahakis in 1967.

Boise Cascade Company enjoyed a boost of 3% to its sales in the first quarter, but took a hit in terms of net income.

The company's bottom line was $5.57 million in the three-month period ended March 31 -- down from $80.8 million in the same period last year. The company attributed last year's high income to a $68.7 million income tax benefit associated with recording net deferred tax assets after Boise Cascade converted from a limited liability corporation to a corporation.

Bill Adams, founder and chairman of Adams Manufacturing, has been honored with the 2014 Inventor of the Year Award from the Pittsburgh Intellectual Property Law Association (PIPLA).

Adams took home the top honor this year due to his innovations in the design of suction cups, outdoor resin furniture, holiday accessories and other consumer products. It's also a nod to the significant economic impact he has made on the western Pennsylvania region and American manufacturing as a whole.

Lumber Liquidators is getting ready to launch its 11th annual April Sale, which began as a "Black Friday" tradition associated with tax season.

"It's not by chance that our big sale is in April," said founder and chairman Tom Sullivan. "In 2004, my accountant came to me and warned that we needed to pay taxes by April 15th and that we were not going to have enough funds, so we quickly put together a huge sale to offer our overstock hardwood flooring at incredible prices. People loved the deals and we paid our taxes just in time!"

Tempe, Ariz.-based MTD Southwest Inc. is recalling several thousand Remington and Troy-Bilt electric leaf blowers, citing a laceration hazard applicable to both brands.

The blower's impeller has a reported tendency to break and strike the operator during use. MTD received 17 incident reports related to the Troy-Bilt model, which included 12 injuries that resulted in cuts, bruises and lacerations requiring stitches. One incident involving the Remington model was reported, which resulted in cuts and bruises.

Deltic Timber Corporation managed to generate more positive sales flow to its coffers in the first quarter of 2014, though its net income was not as impressive as last year's.

Net sales for the three months ended March 31 were $55.4 million, up 33.2% year-over-year.

Net income for the quarter was $4.9 million, down from 2013's $6.8 million. President and CEO Ray Dillon attributed the decrease to lower operating income for the company's Manufacturing segment; harsh winter weather conditions slowed construction activity through much of the country.

The National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association convention was held in Washington DC on March 31 thru April 2. I was in attendance with my fun and beautiful wife Melinda Ganahl. After I took the role of the WCLBMA President in late 2013, [WCLBMA Executive Director] Ken Dunham and I discussed the various duties I needed to perform. On that list was attending the National Legislative Conference in DC. The purpose of my being there was to represent our West Coast interests.

The first quarter of 2014 was kind to PPG Industries' top-line revenue and its profits.

Net sales for the three months ended March 31 were $3.64 billion, up 17.1% year-over-year.

Profit from continued operations was $277 million, up roughly 45% from $191 million in the first quarter of 2013.

It's the timing agreement that just won't quit.

Louisiana-Pacific Corporation and Ainsworth Lumber Co. announced Friday that they were extending the outside date for completion of the acquisition -- a third time.

LP's acquisition of Ainsworth was most recently scheduled to be completed by April 18, but that deadline has now been pushed back to June 2, 2014.

The Sherwin-Williams Company announced mixed results Thursday for the first quarter of 2014, which saw greater top-line revenue for the company that wasn't matched by its net income performance.

Net sales for the three months ended March 31 were $2.37 billion, up 9.2% from $2.17 billion the year before. Sherwin-Williams attributed the increase primarily to higher paint sales volume in the Paint Stores Group and acquisitions, which accounted for 4.5% of the increase alone. Net sales in the Paint Stores Group increased 16.4% to $1.36 billion.

Universal Forest Products, Inc. announced its first-quarter 2014 results Wednesday, which showed marked improvement in bottom-line earnings but relatively stagnant revenues.

Net sales for the quarter came in at $554.0 million, barely changed since last year's $554.5 million. Net earnings for the peiod came in at $7.2 million, which is up 38% year-over-year.

Citing a tendency for the metal housing and lens to separate from the bulb's base and fall, Satco Products is recalling several thousand of its KolourOne LED Light Bulbs.

The recall affects about 119,000 units in the U.S. and 2,350 in Canada of the KolourOne Brand Panel Array 2.0 and DUO 2.0 PAR 30 and 38 LED Light Bulbs.

Four reports have been received of the bulb components separating and falling, but no injuries have yet been reported.

Forest products giant Weyerhaeuser says it will reorder its leadership team this summer.

Current SVP, general counsel Sandy McDade is retiring in July. Succeeding her will be Devin Stockfish, who will also maintain his current role as corporate secretary. Stockfish has been serving as corporate secretary and assistant general counsel since last June. Before joining the company, he was VP & associate general counsel at Univar Inc.

Also retiring is Sara Kendall, VP corporate affairs and sustainability, on May 2.

Acquisition-oriented US LBM is at it again, this time with an expansion in Wisconsin.

Following on the heels of two new Hines openings in Northern Illinois, US LBM’s Wisconsin Building Supply subsidiary announced the opening of two new locations in the Fond du Lac area.
