Bill Tucker, former president of the Florida Building Material Association and his wife Terri, previously CFO of Ro-Mac Lumber and Supply, have formed E to the Third Power Consulting -- e3 Consulting. 

Based in Leesburg, Fla., the company will offer leadership training as well as CFO-level services to companies unable to afford a full-time CFO. “E to the third power refers to the three E’s we bring to our clients: experience, expertise and empathy," said Bill Tucker.

Christian Miller Snavely, Jr., the chairman emeritus of Snavely Forest Products , World War II veteran and past chairman of the North American Wholesale Lumber Association died Oct. 24. He was 88.

Snavely is remembered by friends and colleagues as a generous and well-respected business leader. He was elected chairman of the industry trade association, NAWLA, which honored him with the prestigious Mulrooney Award for outstanding contributions to the forest products industry.

New Jersey pro dealer Madison Township Lumber & Supply Co. passed the half-century mark this year. 

Serving the entire Garen State, the single-unit location in Matawan, N.J., was founded in 1962 by Anthony J. Martorana Sr., who remains as CEO of the family business. His wife, Louise Ann, is CFO and son Anthony Jr. serves as VP sales and operations.

The dealer distributes BlueLinx I Joist and Billet Beams, hardware, lumber, millwork, Silver Line Windows and Benjamin Moore Paint.

Emmett Francis McCoy, 88, of San Marcos, Texas, passed away Jan. 7.

Jim Guest, 58, passed away on Sept. 5 of cancer. Guest was a 35-year employee of 84 Lumber and lived in Washington, Pa. He joined the company in 1976 and worked a number of jobs, eventually becoming director of associate development.

Joining the ranks of new Ace Hardware dealers is Ralph Peperone, a retired police lieutenant from New Orleans who plans to open a 10,322-sq.-ft. store in the town of Oakland, Tenn., according to an article in the Memphis Business Journal.

Ace Hardware in Largo, Fla., a 36-year-old business, closed on June 29, according to an article in the St. Petersburg Times. 

Owner Bob Hoag, a former hospital administrator from Michigan, and his wife, Mary Jane Hoag, purchased the store from the original owners four years ago.

Zinger Hardware of Austin, Texas, will be relocating to a vacant bookstore with an outdoor center where it can build a children’s playground and a butterfly garden, according to an article in the Austin American Statesman.

Westlake Ace Hardware and Price Hardware True Value were recognized for excellence during the 2011 Golden Hammer Awards ceremony held at the National Hardware Show in Las Vegas.

George Smith, CEO of Lenexa, Kan.-based Westlake Ace Hardware accepted the Retailer of the Year award. John Price accepted the Tools of the Trade award for Price Hardware True Value of Atlanta, Texas.

John Price said a fairly typical customer in his Price Hardware True Value store used to stop in for a PVC elbow or similar pipe fitting and be gone in about 10 minutes. Today, that customer is apt to grab a shopping cart, stroll through the aisles and purchase several items.
