The family of John William Bacon announced his passing on Nov. 13 at the age of 84.

A native of San Mateo, California, Bacon was a lifelong resident of the San Francisco Bay area whose lumber-industry career began in the early 1950s at San Bruno Lumber Company. 

He later purchased South City Lumber & Supply, Economy Lumber Company of Oakland, and Piedmont Lumber. 

He died at his home in Atherton, California. He is survived by his wife, Lynn; seven children, 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Leeds, Alabama-based Marvin’s Building Materials and Home Centers is adding to its fleet of mid-sized home centers that serve the Southern home builder and the homeowner.

The store in Ozark, Alabama, is currently under construction and is expected to open in the spring of 2015. When completed, the Alabama chain will operate 28 stores. The store will feature a 30,000-sq.-ft. home center in addition to an attached lawn and garden center and drive-through lumberyard.

Garden Media Group released its annual garden trends report for 2015, which includes nine gardening and lifestyle trends influencing the industry.

Among them is the increased awareness of backyard cannabis. 

“First it was ‘eat your garden.’ Then it was ‘drink your garden.’ Now, it’s ‘smoke your garden,’” says Susan McCoy, president of Philadelphia-basedGarden Media. “Marijuana is going to become a great ornamental plant as people continue to customize their garden and outdoor space to meet their needs.”

Sean Fogarty is stepping into the role of president of the West Coast Lumber & Building Material Association.

Fogarty is VP of Osborne Lumber in Newark, California, where he represents the third generation of the family business that opened in 1950. 

During the organization’s annul convention last week in Indian Wells, California, Fogarty encouraged the industry to stick together and stay involved.

Boise Cascade Company has elected David Hannah, CEO of Reliance Steel and Aluminum Company, to its board of directors. He will serve on the Compensation Committee and Corporate Governance & Nominating Committee.

"David has had a very successful career in both manufacturing and distribution and provides a unique perspective on how we can effectively grow Boise Cascade," said Boise Cascade chairman Duane McDougall.

J.D. Saunders of Campbell, California-based Economy Lumber was officially installed as the incoming chairman of the NLBMDA.

Building products distributor ABC Supply Co. promoted 20 branch managers from around the country to managing partner. 

This move gives these managers a more prominent leadership role within the company.

St. Louis-based Huttig Building Products hired Bob Kern Sr. as the new territory manager to cover southern New Jersey from the Huttig Wilkes-Barre branch in Pennsylvania. 

Kern has more than 20 years of experience in the building materials industry. He started his career with Peter Lumber Company in Pleasantville, New Jersey, where he was the operations manager for many years. Most recently, Kern was territory manager with Milliken Millwork.

Mid-State Lumber Corp. has hired David Baldino as its newest territory manager for the Connecticut market.

Baldino brings over 33 years of sales experience to the table specific to the building materials industry.

He got his start working as a sales representative for a retail lumber yard out of college, and spent the last 30 years working as a sales representative in the wholesale chain, with a focus on Connecticut.

In his most recent position, he served as sales representative at BB&S Treaters of New England.

TOTO has officially begun operations at its new 645,834-sq.-ft. factory in Gujarat, India, the company's first South Asian plant.

The move comes ahead of the company's centenary in 2017, as well as a corporate vision plan to focus its resources on its international housing products business.

The new facility sits on a 44-acre lot and is set to produce 500,000 toilets a year to serve the burgeoning Indian market, as well as the company's subsidiaries in Europe and the Middle East.

Companies that participated in the HCN Distributor Scoreboard Survey showed overwhelming sales improvement in 2013.  

One reason: Rising housing starts lift all boats in this industry. Annual housing starts of 923,400 for the year reflected a gain of 18.3%. 

Among the biggest gainers below were Sherwood Lumber, up 35%; Forest City Trading Group, up 29%; and Amerhart, up 23%.

Taylor played a key role in the success of the SP Window and Door operations and was previously the Plant Manager at the SP Windows Plant in Red Bluff, California.
