Anderson, S.C.-based Delta Power Equipment introduced four new sanders. The new sanders include a 26-in. Dual Drum Sander, Model 31-481; a 6-in. by 89-in. Oscillating Edge Sander, Model 31-482; a Heavy Duty Oscillating Bench Spindle Sander; Model 31-483; and a Heavy Duty Oscillating Spindle Floor Sander, Model 31-484.

Delta is also introducing more than 95 abrasive SKUs to support these new sanders, and all sanders, with high-quality, long-lasting sanding products, including sleeves, belts, discs and strips.

Dallas-based pro dealer Builders FirstSource has announced a new location in Clarksville, Tenn., approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville. The facility is situated on five acres and includes a 25,000-sq.-ft. warehouse. It will offer lumber, engineered I-joist systems, roof and floor trusses, windows, doors, millwork and various other building products and materials. The scheduled opening date is in early June.

CEO Floyd Sherman said the company is looking forward to expanding its footprint in northern Tennessee and southern Kentucky.

Michaels Stores has announced the establishment of an interim office of the CEO to provide ongoing leadership and continuity for the business in the absence of current CEO John Menzer. Sharing the interim CEO duties will be Lew Klessel, managing director with Bain Capital Partners, and Charles "Chuck" Sonsteby, the company's chief administrative officer and CFO.

Ply Gem, a manufacturer of windows, siding, and other exterior building products, reported net sales of $239.2 million for its first fiscal quarter of 2012, a 19.5% increase over net sales of $200.1 million during the same period in 2011. 

Earnings during the first quarter were $1.2 million compared with a $7.6 million loss for the first quarter of 2011, after excluding $6.7 million of inventory buyback expense in 2011 associated with a significant new customer.

Overall, Home Depot saw comp-store sales increase 5.8% in the first quarter of strong sales and earnings growth.

Oak Brook, Ill.-based Ace Hardware Corp. posted total revenues of $908.2 million for the first quarter of 2012, an increase of 6.3% compared with 2011.

Net income was $10.2 million for the first quarter of 2012, an increase of 49.3% compared with $6.8 million in 2011.

Ken Hannah, a former senior VP at Home Depot, has been named the new CFO at J.C. Penney.

Hannah brings more than 20 years of finance, operations and audit experience from a wide range of companies that include General Electric, Boeing and The Home Depot. He will report to chief operating officer Mike Kramer.

By a 4-1 vote, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) on April 25, 2012, approved a new guidance on criminal background checks.

Consolidating and superseding previous EEOC guidance on criminal background checks, the guidance discourages blanket exclusions of individuals who have been convicted of crimes and encourages the use of individualized assessments of whether an employer’s criminal conduct exclusion is job related and consistent with business necessity.

Atlanta-based BlueLinx Holdings posted a net loss of $11.0 million for the first quarter ended March 31, compared with a net loss of $12.3 million in the first quarter of 2011.

The building products distributor reported first-quarter revenue of $453.7 million, up 16.2% from $390.6 million in the same period a year ago. The increase in revenue is attributable to increased unit volumes and increased underlying product prices for both product categories.

Central Garden & Pet reported second-quarter net sales of $466.9 million, down 4% from  $485.7 million in the same period a year ago. Net income for the quarter ended March 24 totaled $21.6 million, compared with net income of $31.8 million in the second quarter of 2011.

San Carlos, Calif.-based Kelly-Moore Paints has introduced its new zero-VOC colorants, which “will maintain excellent interior air quality during application without sacrificing performance,” according to the company.

Kelly-Moore is transitioning from conventional universal colorants to the new zero-VOC colorants; this has been completed in all of the company’s California and Nevada locations. The rest of its stores will be completed by this summer.

A. O. Smith Corp. has posted first-quarter net earnings of $47.5 million, compared with $24.2 million in the prior-year quarter. Net earnings included an after-tax gain of $16.7 million, related to the sale of shares of Regal Beloit Corporation, which were received from the 2011 divestiture of the electric motor business.

Las Vegas -- New this year to the National Hardware Show was the Pitch Tank, where inventors got two minutes to demonstrate their new products to a panel of three experts for some criticism and advice. But there was no Simon Cowell skewering the amateurs in the glass-walled booth near the Inventor’s Spotlight section. Kevin Harrington of ABC’s Shark Tank and chairman of TVGoods, along with two other product development specialists and marketers, offered mostly positive feedback to a cavalcade of hopeful candidates.
