The former FBI agent and current CEO of Chicago-based True Value Company went undercover on the CBS TV show "Undercover Boss" broadcast Sunday night. 

After driving a forklift, working a cash register and helping customers on the floor, John Hartmann uncovered himself as president and CEO during a reveal that packed an emotional punch.

Oak Brook, Illinois-based Ace Hardware reported November same-store sales were up 9.9% over November 2013.

In addition, same-store transactions improved by 4.9% year over year.

According to Ace President and CEO John Venhuizen, the gains came despite the decision of most Ace stores to remain closed on Thanksgiving. “November same-store sales were up 9.9 percent, and looking ahead, I’m confident that many of our loyal and local consumers will find equally compelling values for their last-minute Christmas shopping needs at their neighborhood Ace.”

Effective immediately, Do it Best has promoted Bob Harville to the post of regional sales and business development manager.

In his new role, Harville and his team of territory managers will counsel Do it Best members as well as actively seek to recruit new ones. Harville will lead a team of 10 territory managers across 12 states in the Southeast.

Hardware industry vendors descended on Fort Wayne, Indiana, Dec. 2 as Do it Best Corp.’s Open Buying Day kicked off at its headquarters.

The event enabled Do it Best merchandise managers to meet one-on-one with prospective vendors interested in doing business with Do it Best Corp. and its member-owners. The products presented as part of this year’s Open Buying Day covered all product categories, from tools to housewares.  

Prospective domestic and international vendors participated.

In a move described as a “preparation for strategic growth,” Portland, Maine-based Emery-Waterhouse announced the promotion of Megan Freise to Senior Brand Manager.  

In this new role, Freise will lead the development and execution of Emery’s brand messaging, emphasizing the renewed focus on retailer strategy and success.

Describing its third-quarter performance as record-breaking, Oak Brook, Illinois-based Ace Hardware Corp. reported total revenues of $1.13 billion for the third quarter of 2014, an increase of 9.1%, from the third quarter of 2013.

Net income was $37.3 million for the third quarter of 2014, up 8.4%.

Oak Brook, Illinois-based Ace Hardware Corporation hired Steve Locanto as corporate controller. Reporting to Ace’s Chief Financial Officer Bill Guzik, Locanto will oversee a broad range of financial matters, including internal and external financial reporting, internal controls, operational accounting and systems.

True Value Company reported sales gains during the third quarter of 2014, lifted partly by seasonal and paint departments.

Net revenue of $350.6 million were up 1.0% over the third quarter of 2013. The company's gross billings came in at $466.4 million, up 2.4%.

Net margin fell 35.3% to $12.1 million, a decrease True Value blames on the timing of the Fall Reunion.

Indianapolis -- Do it Best Corp. distributed more than a $100 million in member rebates during the co-op's annual shareholders meeting Sunday night. 

It was the 11th consecutive year of $100 million-plus rebates, and another chance for CEO Bob Taylor to present his state-of-the company report -- emphasis on members growing their business and overcoming challenges.

Indianapolis -- The Do it Best Fall Market is under way in Indianapolis, where dealers and vendors will be conducting business through Monday afternoon. 

Friday’s events included a day of education, as well as a Power Preview in Victory Field. Here at the home of the Indianapolis Indians, dealers get a taste of the latest in outdoor power equipment, plus a tasty samples from the grill exhibits.

As part of a broad strategic plan, True Value unveiled a new approach to merchandising and pricing during the Chicago-based co-op’s General Session in Denver.

One takeaway: expect fewer opening price points in the True Value assortments. “No one makes money on opening-price-point product,” said Ken Goodgame, True Value’s senior VP and chief merchandise officer.

Denver -- Though many of the usual suspects were on-hand at the 2014 True Value Fall Reunion, more than one of the show floor's sizzling merchandise developments took place among the grills.

Relatively new to the hardware scene is Traeger Grills, a line of sleek wood pellet grills that now feature a Digital Pro Controller with dual meat probes, a removable grill shelf and EZ-Fold legs for added portability.

The grills can also double as convection ovens, opening the door to all kinds of possibilities that include hickory-smoked chocolate chip cookies.

Washington, D.C.-based Logan Hardware, a member of the nine-store Ace Chain "A Few Cool Hardware Stores," has officially reopened the doors at its new location after months of construction.

Effective Oct. 9, the store was open to customers, though the store is still in the process of completing certain renovations.

Denver – True Value unveiled big plans for its advertising in 2015. In President and CEO John Hartmann's words, "the changes will be transformational, and I mean like we haven't advertised in over a decade."

Hartmann left it up to SVP & Chief Customer Officer Blake Fohl and SVP & Chief Merchandise Officer Ken Goodgame to deliver the news of an expanded national TV branding campaign. They described a national television program with ten times more spend in 2015.

Denver -- The General Session at the 2014 True Value Fall Reunion in Denver opened with a few words of inspiration from chairman of the board Brent Burger.

"As you can see from the agenda card, we have a very full program this afternoon and I promise you that it will be one of most exciting General Sessions we have ever had," said Burger, the owner of five Campbell's True Value locations in Maine.

The exhibit floor of the 2014 True Value Fall Reunion, taking place this year in Denver, Colorado, officially opens on Friday, but some early activities are already under way.

Visitors filed into the Colorado Convention Center Thursday afternoon, where drinks and hors d'oeuvres were on-hand at the Farm & Ranch Reception.

The throngs then proceeded to the show floor to get a sneak peek of this year's farm & ranch section, where feed, pet products and lawn & garden products were prominent.

BlueTarp Financial announced that Ace Hardware Corporation has selected BlueTarp as the preferred commercial credit program for its Ace stores. 

The move brings BlueTarp closer to the Ace organization, members of which can choose to participate. The program is rolling out on a limited bases currently, with broad availability targeted for the fourth quarter.

Do it Best is giving customers a nudge timed with the onset of football season -- and it comes with promotions and opportunities to win prizes.

The co-op sent out an email blast Monday promoting its grills, coolers, snacks, plates and utensils.

The newsletter also touted Do it Best's Black & Decker Fall Cleanup Giveaway, with prizes which total over $700 in Black & Decker products.

Orlando, Florida -- With Internet sales growing faster than other channels across the U.S. retail scene, Ace Hardware rolled out a new Web-embracing deal for dealers.

In essence, retailers that sign up for Ace’s In-Store Pick Up service receive 100% profit on Internet sales, up from 70%.

Ace Hardware is expanding its use of the services of eBay Enterprise to deliver omnichannel In-Store Pickup services to its customers, which is due to be implemented in a total of 1,000 stores nationwide.

At the same session, the co-op rallied around the morning's slogan "Building Momentum," and executives had statistics to back it up.

Ace Hardware Corporation has employed the wares of Digital Lumens in upgrading the lighting of its 1-million-sq.-ft. Retail Support Center in Rocklin, California.

The facility has been outfitted in Digital Lumens Intelligent LED Lighting since October 2013, saving Ace an average of 81% on lighting-related energy use, the company said.
