A mild spring of weather conducive to farm and ranch sales propelled Tractor Supply Corp. to a strong first quarter.

The Brentwood, Tenn.-based farm and ranch retailer saw same-store sales increase 11.5% in the first quarter ended March 31. Net sales increased 22.0% to $1.02 billion.

Net income for the quarter was $40.3 million, compared to net income of $18.3 million in the same quarter last year.

Boise, Idaho-based Boise posted fourth-quarter sales of $600.4 million, up 14.6% from $524.1 million in the same quarter of 2010.

"The past year was our most successful year since our inception four years ago," said Alexander Toeldte, president and CEO of Boise. "Our EBITDA excluding special items was a record $340 million, we generated $121 million in free cash flow, and returned $169 million of capital to our shareholders through share repurchases and dividends."

Building products manufacturer Owens Corning reported net sales of $5.3 billion for fiscal year 2011, a 7% increase from net sales of $5.0 billion in 2010.

Net earnings for the year were $276 million, compared with net earnings of $933 million in 2010.

Bloomington, Minn.-based Toro Co. posted record sales in 2011, including a 5.8% sales gain in the company's residential segment. 

“Fiscal 2011 was a very good year for the Toro Co., delivering record revenues and earnings per share,” said Michael Hoffman, Toro’s chairman and CEO.

For the year, the company's total earnings were up 26.3% to $117.7 million, and net sales were up 11.5% to $1.884 billion. In the fourth quarter, net earnings increased from $3.2 million to $5 million, as net sales increased 9.1% to $337.3 million.

Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Universal Forest Products posted third-quarter net earnings of $5.6 million, up from net earnings of $2.6 million in the same quarter last year.

Net sales of $468.9 million in the third quarter of 2011 were down 2.4% from net sales of $480.6 million for the same period of last year.

Sales increased 4.2% at The Home Depot, the company reported Tuesday morning.

The Atlanta-based company posted $20.2 billion in sales for the period. The company's net earnings for the quarter were $1.4 billion, compared with net earnings of $1.2 billion in the same period of fiscal 2010. 

Encouraged by the growth, the world's largest home improvement retailer raised its fiscal 2011 diluted earnings-per-share guidance to an expectation of $2.34 for the year, up 16%.

Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Universal Forest Products (UFP) posted first-quarter 2011 net sales of $387.2 million, down 1.5% from net sales of $393.0 million in the same period of 2010.

UFP posted a net loss of $3.7 million compared with net earnings of $1.0 million for the first quarter of 2010.
