Smart thermostats, also known as programmable communicating thermostats (PCTs), offer integrated features that surpass the basic sensing and control functions of traditional thermostats. Although the market for smart thermostats has struggled to gain traction, recent developments – particularly the purchase of smart thermostat maker Nest Labs by Google, for a reported $3.2 billion – indicate that growth is likely to accelerate.

The biggest name on the Web is carving out a small sliver of the home improvement space.

Mountain View, Calif.-based Google agreed to pay $3.2 billion in cash for Nest Labs, which makes high-end thermostats and smoke alarms.

Since its launch in 2011, the Nest Learning Thermostat has received strong reviews in various outlets, and so has the company’s new Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm. The new alarm uses a recorded human voice to indicate low battery and other signals, as opposed to annoying beeps.

Nest Labs announced that its Nest Learning Thermostat is on the shelves of more than 500 Lowe’s stores plus Lowes.com.

The product will find a home in the retailer’s new Innovation merchandising displays featuring interactive end caps that display new products in home improvement.
