HCN congratulates the 50 hardware store, home center and farm & ranch retailers who made the annual HCN Hardware Store All-Star list.

Now in its third year, HCN's annual list of high performers recognizes hardware stores -- one from each state -- that are outstanding in their field. The complete list and analysis can be found in the September issue of HCN. Meanwhile, HCN Daily will work its way across the country with mini profiles, continuing this week with Nebraska, Kansa and Iowa.

Nebraska-based construction company Kiewit has promoted Lance Wilhelm to senior VP of its Hawaii operations.

Wilhelm will be leaving his post as area manager, wherein he oversaw the company's Hawaii vertical building operations, which included the construction of the Trump Tower in Waikiki. In his new role, he will oversee lead market, industry, operations and community involvement in the region, as well as continue to play a significant role in the construction of the Honolulu Rapid Transit System.

Bart and Diana Tyler, proprieters of Kelloggs & Lawrence in Katonah, N.Y., and DeWayne Tripp, owner of Hinton (Okla.) Hardware joined an elite crowd in 2013: HCN Hardware Store All-Stars. Their stores made the list, along with 48 other worthy retailers, one from each state.

Not paying attention to big-box competitors seems to have worked out well for 85-year-old Walt Wenzl, who recently celebrated his 70th year working for Wenzl Hardware Store in Nebraska City. He has owned and operated the independent hardware store since 1954, the Lincoln Journal Star reported.

Las Vegas — Ray Griffith kicked off the Golden Hammer retail awards presentation with a joke: "Does everyone have an hour? I have a long speech." He got an even bigger laugh when he called out a moderator for his use of the word "entertainment" to describe the panel discussion.

But the concepts that Griffith and the other retail honorees shared during the 29th Golden Hammer Awards ceremony held here during the National Hardware Show contained a serious tone as hardware stores appear to be poised to pounce on a swelling industry recovery.

Omaha, Neb.-based Thomas Creek Wood Countertops introduced its custom wood countertop line to service home centers, cabinet dealers and manufacturers nationwide.    

Countertops are available in multiple thicknesses, species and configurations, including both end-grain and edge-grain. Hundreds of possible combinations are available, the company said.

According to an article in the Nebraska starherald.com, Menards has teamed with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve's Toys for Tots program and the Community Action Partnership of Western Nebraska. 

The goal for this year's toy drive, which runs through Dec. 14, is to beat last year's pace of toy donations. Last year marked the first year of the toy drive for the store, which resulted in 261 donations in the under $5 category, and 157 donations of toys priced higher than $5.

Scranton, Pa.-based AZEK Building Products signed a distribution deal with OrePac Building Products, a building materials wholesaler serving the West and Pacific Northwest.   

Under the agreement, OrePac’s Denver, Colo., and Salt Lake City, Utah, branches will offer the full line of premium, exterior AZEK products.  OrePac’s Denver branch covers Colorado, Eastern Wyoming, Northern New Mexico and the Scottsbluff area of Nebraska, while the Salt Lake City branch covers Utah, Southwestern Wyoming, Eastern Nevada and Southeastern Idaho.

Menards has begun building its fourth store in the Omaha, Neb., metro area, and this unit will sit right next to a sports facility. An article in the Ralston Recorder explains how the deal to bring the Menards to Ralston, a community at the southern edge of Omaha, spanned more than two years and required a state bill to allow the city to capture 70% of state sales tax on new businesses opening within 600 yards of the Ralston Arena.

Regional chain Mead Lumber Co. has decided to close its Ashland, Neb., location on July 7, according to an article in the Journal-Star.

The 102-year-old lumberyard was not able to generate enough volume to make the business viable, spokeswoman Kate Mead told the newspaper. She added that local home builders were often bringing in building supplies from outside the area.

Mead Lumber, the regional LBM chain with locations in seven Midwestern states, has purchased four locations of Fullerton Building Center, according to an announcement on its website.  

The stores are located in Yankton, S.D., and Vermillion, Winner, and Norfolk, Neb. Fullerton will still operate its lumberyards in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Massachusetts has replaced California at the top of the Energy Scorecard Top 10, which measures the states' efforts to plan and implement efficient energy policies.

According to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), which maintains and publishes the list, the six most improved states are Michigan, Illinois, Nebraska, Alabama, Maryland and Tennessee.

The Scorecard ranks the states based on metrics that capture best practices and recognize leadership in energy-efficiency policy and program implementation, according to the ACEEE.

The damage done by the mountain pine beetle to the forests in British Columbia has received much attention, given the billions of dollars already lost to this pernicious pest. But Dendroctonus ponderosae knows no borders, and now the western United States is grappling with the same epidemic. The pine beetle has spread to Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota and Colorado.
