Weyerhaeuser Distribution is buffing up its James Hardie fiber cement siding offerings at its St. Paul, Minn. location. 

The distribution center will now carry the full line of SKUs, which includes the addition of ColorPlus technology, a factory-applied finish that lasts up to two times longer and has 30% better fade resistance.

The full line includes HardiePlank siding, HardiePanel siding, HardieShingle siding, HardieSoffit panels, HardieTrim boards and HardieBacker cement board.

Orlando, Fla. -- Here at the 2014 Home Improvement Research Institute (HIRI) Spring Conference, Sarah Catlett, VP of The Futures Company, took a high-level, continental look at consumer marketing.

Catlett kicked off the HIRI conference with a quick look at Target's disappointing venture into Canada. The Minnesota-based retailer's efforts to change the way Canadians shop has fallen short, she said, partly because the company missed consumer and cultural cues.

New Ulm, Minn.-based Shelter Products launched a Therma-Tru door line called Elegant Entrys. Shelter Products will be carrying the complete line of entry and patio doors manufactured by Therma-Tru in their Indiana facility.  

Shelter Products says it believes its relationship with the Therma-Tru Door company is unique, and that they will become the premier distributor of this product.

Improved demand for cabinetry propelled Eagan, Minn.-based Norcraft Companies to a fourth-quarter sales increase of 13%.

The maker of kitchen and bathroom cabinetry in the United States and Canada completed its initial public offering in the fourth quarter, in which sales reached $80.5 million.

RPM International's Rust-Oleum Group has acquired Citadel Restoration and Repair, a St. Paul, Minn.-based floor coatings business.

"Citadel has an outstanding technology platform that we believe can be rapidly expanded in the marketplace by utilizing Rust-Oleum's marketing and distribution expertise," stated Frank C. Sullivan, RPM chairman and CEO. "Patrick Ilfrey, majority owner of Citadel, will continue to lead the Citadel business as part of the Rust-Oleum Group."

Industrial products supplier Fastenal reported fourth-quarter net sales of $813.8 million, up 7.5% from $757.2 million in the same quarter last year. But the company didn't grow as fast as it anticipated.

The Winona, Minn.-based company reported net earnings of $99.2 million, up 0.5% from the previous year's quarter.

St. Paul, Minn.-based Seven Corners Hardware, which has served hobbyists, homeowners, contractors and other DIY-oriented customers in the Twin Cities and beyond since 1933, will be closing its doors as a result of a real estate deal, said third-generation owner Bill Walsh, whose father and grandfather previously ran the store.

The company retained Tiger Capital Group to direct the sale of its merchandise inventories and other assets.

Winona, Minn.-based Fastenal Co. said it expects to miss the average analyst net earnings expectations for the fourth quarter of 2013 of $0.36 per share.

The company listed three reasons for the miss. First is weakness in the heavy manufacturing component of the business. This weakness first appeared in late 2012, and intensified in recent months, the company said.

The Toro Company's PrecisionSense site assessment system received high marks for innovation at the 2013 Tekne Awards, held by the Minnesota High Tech Association (MHTA) at the Minneapolis Convention Center on Nov. 6.

The company took home the 2013 Tekne Award for Agricultural Technology thanks to its use of mobile soil sensing and data collection technology to measure soil moisture, salinity, compaction, plant performance and more -- all aimed at utilizing water and resources more efficiently.

The Lowe’s store closed in August 2011, after opening in August 2009.

Minnesota carpet cleaning service Zerorez is filing a lawsuit against its competitor, Distinctive Cleaning, for a litany of complaints that include trademark infringement, false advertising and deceptive practices.

The federal lawsuit filed in the Minnesota District Court on Mon. referenced instances in which Distinctive Cleaning misled its customers regarding Zerorez's patented technology, which claims to clean without leaving residue behind.

Lifted by more favorable weather patterns, Bloomington, Minn.-based The Toro Co. reported strong sales in its residential division. 

Residential segment net sales for the third quarter totaled $155.5 million, up 14.4% from the prior-year period. Favorable temperatures and precipitation levels in the quarter led to sales increases across all summer product categories, including riding products, walk power mowers and handheld trimmer and blower products.

Green Bay, Wis.-based building materials distributor Amerhart announced that Tom Miller will take over the newly created role of VP supply chain management. 

Miller is a 25-year industry veteran who most recently served the company in the role of national accounts manager.

Amerhart operates several distribution facilities in Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota. It distributes building materials and lumber products to pro dealers, home centers and industrial accounts.

Winona, Minn.-based Fastenal Co. reported second-quarter sales of $847.6 million, up 5.3% from the same quarter last year. The company's net earnings increased 7.7% in the quarter to $121.0 million.

Fastenal had 2,677 stores as of June 30 and at the same time operated 29,549 FAST Solutions industrial vending machines. During the first six months, Fastenal opened 33 new stores.

No matter how you slice them, the numbers of the HCN Top 300 Industry Scoreboard reflect the rising housing market, increased spending on the home and an easy comparison with the previous year's performance.

Of the leading 300 home channel retailers, 277 show positive sales in the most recently completed finished fiscal year, and 12 show declines. Eleven others are listed as flat.

Bloomington, Minn.-based The Toro Co. reported record highs in sales and earnings for the second quarter, despite a double-digit sales decline in the residential division.

The company posted net earnings of $78.4 million, on a net sales increase of 1.9%, to $704.5 million for its fiscal second quarter ended May 3. 

In the comparable fiscal 2012 period, the company delivered net earnings of $68.8 million on net sales of $691.5 million.
