Residential remodeling activity hit a record high in August 2011, rising 29% in year-over-year comparisons, according to an index compiled by BuildFax, a national database of building permit data. It was the 22nd consecutive month of increases and the highest level of remodeling activity since the index was introduced in 2004.

Anderson, S.C.-based Delta Power Equipment Corp. named four regional sales managers: Joe Brakhage, Northeast, Rick Carr, Midwest; Dennis Mickelson, Western; and Curt Thomas, Southeastern.

Carr started with Rockwell International’s power tool division in 1977 as a district sales manager and worked his way up through the Pentair Tool Group to become hardware channel national accounts manager from 1999 to 2003 with responsibilities for a number of their brands, including Delta. Most recently, he was hardware channel national accounts manager with Senco Brands.

The BuildFax Remodeling Index for May 2011 reported that despite high unemployment rates and falling home prices, remodeling activity has reached a new high. The index, released July 18, was reported to be up 22% with a value of 124.3 for May, the highest number since the index’s introduction in 2004. Furthermore, BuildFax reported, May marked the 19th straight month for year-over-year gains in the remodeling industry. Consumers, the data show, are continuing to invest in remodeling and are choosing to remodel rather than purchase new homes.

An article in the New York Times examined the impact of natural disasters on local economies, as the story in the tornado-ravaged Midwest turns to one of reconstruction.

Spending on building materials is a natural outgrowth of the horrible damage sustained by cities such as Joplin, Mo., headquarters of Tamko Building Products.

Tamko donated $1 million to the Greater Ozarks Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Oklahoma City-based Cedar Creek announced that the company closed the deal to acquire Epperson Lumber of Statesville, N.C. 

Cedar Creek is a wholesale building material distribution company with 12 locations covering 17 states in the Mid-South, Midwest and Southeast.  In May 2010, Cedar Creek was recapitalized by Boston-based Charlesbank Capital Partners, with the goal of providing flexible capital for the company to grow beyond its current trade areas.

Home improvement chain Menards continued its Midwest expansion with a March 28 soft opening in Marshall, a town in southwestern Minnesota, according to an article in the Marshall Independent. The grand opening is scheduled for this week. 

Site preparation and construction for the store had been going on since August 2008, the article said.
