Lumber Liquidators reported sales gains for the third quarter ended Sept. 30, though its revenues fell on the lower end of its guidance and below those of Wall Street.

The company also updated its full-year expectations for 2014: net sales are expected to fall within the range of $1.05 billion to $1.065 billion, compared to $1.05 billion to $1.10 billion. Earnings per diluted share are expected to come in at a range of $2.38 to $2.52, down from the previous guidance of $2.65 to $3.00.

Lumber Liquidators has embraced The United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation's Energy For Life Walkathon series, a campaign aimed at raising awareness of the disorder.

The retailer will be sustaining its sponsorship of the Foundation, a partnership it began in 2013 as part of its philanthropic program, Lay it Forward. It has donated tens of thousands of dollars toward the effort since.

Lumber Liquidators has promoted Ray Cotton to the title of SVP and chief compliance and sustainability officer.

In his new role, he will take on the added task of leading the company's strategic quality and sustainability initiatives, its environmental outreach and its sourcing and product compliance policies.

Cotton was most recently serving as VP and chief compliance and sustainability officer. He will maintain his responsibilities overseeing quality assurance, sustainable sourcing, loss prevention, risk management and legal compliance.

In what is hardly the first bit of legal strife the retailer has contended with in recent months, Lumber Liquidators has a class action suit on its hands over its alleged fiscal misrepresentations.

At least two law firms have filed a securities class action lawsuit on behalf of those who purchased shares of Lumber Liquidators common stock between Nov. 25, 2013 and July 9, 2014.

Toano, Virginia-based Lumber Liquidators has rolled out its latest product catalog for the fall, which includes 60 new flooring choices and insights into new flooring trends.

Hardwood flooring company Lumber Liquidators has donated one of its Dura Dance flooring systems to the Cincinnati, Ohio-based Highsteppers Drill Team as part of its Lay It Forward charity campaign.

The 15-year-old drill team recently moved into a new space, but didn’t have a proper floor, which led to Lumber Liquidators installing the Dura Dance system, which features underlying rubber to reduce impact and absorb energy.

After a delay of several days, Lumber Liquidators has released its second-quarter earnings report, which reflected an estimated aggregate net sales shortfall of up to $18 million in certain product categories. Net sales for the quarter still increased, however, by 2.3%, totaling $263.1 million (compared with $257.1 million in the same quarter last year).

Comparable-store sales decreased by 7.1%, with the average sale declining 1.8%. Net income was $16.6 million for the three months ended June 30, down 18.7% from last year's $20.4 million.

"It's not by chance that our big sale is in April," said founder and chairman Tom Sullivan. "In 2004, my accountant came to me and warned that we needed to pay taxes by April 15th and that we were not going to have enough funds, so we quickly put together a huge sale to offer our overstock hardwood flooring at incredible prices. People loved the deals and we paid our taxes just in time!"
