Swedish retailer IKEA has bought a wind farm in Ireland to power its furniture stores in Dublin and Belfast, according to a report in the Belfast Telegraph.

IKEA Canada has announced that its new catalog, debuting Aug. 13, has incorporated a host of interactive elements designed for smartphones and tablets.

When holding a smartphone or tablet over a page, users are able to access films about IKEA products, experience 3-D models, look behind closed doors with an X-ray function or change curtains and get creative.

Users will access the bonus material by downloading the IKEA app to smartphones or tablets, or by visiting Ikea.ca.

IKEA officially plugged in two Blink Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations at its Portland, Ore., store as part of its partnership with ECOtality, a leader in clean electric transportation and storage technologies.

The initiative is the first such project for IKEA in the United States. Similar installations are planned at eight other IKEA stores in the western United States.

Conshohocken, Pa.-based IKEA announced plans to expand its Round Rock, Texas, store, adding 54,000 sq. ft. and more parking.

The Round Rock store in central Texas will expand from 252,000 sq. ft. to 306,000 sq. ft. Construction activity will begin this month, with an expected completion in summer 2012. The store will remain open during construction.

The size of the store's warehouse capacity is "less than ideal" currently, the company said.

IKEA's 2012 home catalog promotes the theme of “small,” with ideas on how to make more out of less space.

What's the latest home design trend coming out of Sweden? According to the 2012 IKEA catalog, the answer is small.

The company's latest catalog, which runs an impressive 376 pages, carries the cover line: "A home doesn't need to be big, just smart." The catalog kicks off with a photo essay explaining how six friends might decide to live together in 430 square feet.

IKEA's Denver-area store will open in Centennial, Colo., on July 27.

IKEA Centennial is the Swedish company’s first store and restaurant destination in Colorado, 38th in the United States, and 324th worldwide. The 415,000-sq.-ft. IKEA Centennial is located on 13.5 acres along the western side of Interstate 25, north of the Park Meadows area, accessible via the County Line Road exit.

IKEA officially plugged-in the solar energy system installed at its store in East Palo Alto, Calif.  

The 38,000-square-foot array consists of a 302-kW system, built with approximately 1,344 panels.  IKEA East Palo Alto’s program will produce approximately 427,900 kWh of clean electricity annually – the equivalent of eliminating the emissions of 58 cars, the company said.

IKEA plans to install solar PV systems on six more of its locations in the Eastern United States, the company announced.

The installations are expected to begin in late spring with completion later this fall, provided the projects receive governmental permits.

The company recently plugged in a solar project in Colorado.

IKEA will open its first store in Colorado this summer with a Denver area location in Centennial, Colo. The grand opening is set for July 27, much earlier than originally planned due to the fast pace of construction and “timely reviews by local authorities,” according to the home furnishings retailer.

The 415,000 sq. ft. store is being built on 13.5 acres. In addition to solar panels on the roof, the Denver location will be IKEA’s first store to integrate a geothermal component as part of its heating/cooling system.

An IKEA store under construction in Centennial, Colo., incorporated solar and geothermal energy in its construction plans, the company said.

Pending governmental permits, installation of solar panels on the store’s roof will begin next month, with completion by grand opening, scheduled for fall of this year. 

The solar energy system for the 415,000-sq.-ft. location will be designed and built by REC Solar, one of the largest U.S. solar electric providers.
