The 2012 crop of Home Channel News Hardware Store All-Stars marks the second year of the state-by-state accounting of high-performance retailers. The common theme of “excellent customer service” runs through the entire list, but that’s just the beginning.

Rocky’s Ace Hardware will open a new store in Westfield, Mass., during a grand-reopening ceremony May 19.

The new concept store measures 12,000 sq. ft. and is located at the corners of Main and Free Streets. The new store reflects the chain’s “Re-Discover Rocky’s” concept, described by the chain as a hardware store and more.

Sunbury Ace Hardware, an independent dealer outside of Columbus, Ohio, has added U-Haul truck and trailer rentals to its store. Customers can now purchase or rent a variety of moving equipment and supplies, including moving vans, open trailers, closed trailers, furniture pads, appliance dollies, furniture dollies, tow dollies and auto transports. Sunbury Ace Hardware also will offer sales items to protect their customers' belongings and make moving easier, such as heavy-duty boxes, which are made of up to 90% recycled content.

Oak Brook, Ill.-based Ace Hardware Corp. posted total revenues of $908.2 million for the first quarter of 2012, an increase of 6.3% compared with 2011.

Net income was $10.2 million for the first quarter of 2012, an increase of 49.3% compared with $6.8 million in 2011.

Las Vegas -- Four successful hardware and home center operators spent an hour on the Village Stage at the National Hardware Show on May 2 sharing their challenges, strategies and future plans with other event attendees. Ranging in size from three to 36 locations, the dealers varied in scope and location but shared common approaches to customer service, the vendor community and pricing.

A cash mob recently filled the aisles of Newtown Hardware House in Newtown, Pa., to help bail out the store, which has been suffering from the weak economy for four years, according to an article on Philly.com.

Owner Dave Callahan has been running the store for 27 years.

Las Vegas -- Energy efficiency, a consumer focus that is influencing the residential building industry, is moving into the home improvement sector as well, judging from the exhibits at the National Hardware Show. Vendors with energy-saving products could be found in almost every category, and were marked with a special decal this year.

Las Vegas -- New this year to the National Hardware Show was the Pitch Tank, where inventors got two minutes to demonstrate their new products to a panel of three experts for some criticism and advice. But there was no Simon Cowell skewering the amateurs in the glass-walled booth near the Inventor’s Spotlight section. Kevin Harrington of ABC’s Shark Tank and chairman of TVGoods, along with two other product development specialists and marketers, offered mostly positive feedback to a cavalcade of hopeful candidates.

Chicago-based True Value has posted first-quarter revenue of $448.2 million, up 0.1% from $447.8 million in the same period a year ago. The cooperative posted a net margin of $8.1 million in the quarter ended March 31, the same as the year-ago period.

Floyd’s Ace Home Center in Pahrump, Nev., about 65 miles outside of Las Vegas, closed its doors on March 30 and will hold an auction of its remaining inventory on April 29. Nick Moore, son of owners Carl and Julie Moore, told Home Channel News that the business succumbed to the housing market meltdown and competitive pressure from a Home Depot that opened in this desert town of 36,000.

In the California company’s first full-year fiscal earnings report since separating from Sears, Orchard Supply posted a net loss of $14.5 million, compared to net income of $8.7 million in fiscal year 2010.

The company’s sales in 2011 were $660.5 million, roughly flat from the prior years. Same store sales declined 0.6% -- average ticket was up, but transaction volume was down.

The J.D. Power and Associates 2012 U.S. Home Improvement Retailer Store Satisfaction Study ranked Ace Hardware “Highest in Customer Satisfaction with Home Improvement Retail Stores,” for the sixth consecutive year.

Fort Wayne, Ind.-based Do it Best Corp. enhanced its e-commerce website devoted to the sale of Channellock products.

The new site, Channellockproducts.com, is a subsidiary of Do it Best Corp. and is described as “powered by Doitbest.com.”

The site is one of the outcomes of a major initiative in 2009 that brought certain Channellock products exclusively into Do it Best stores in the categories of protective gear, wet/dry vacs, flashlights and other licensed products.

A Fresno, Calif., Ace dealer has taken on a new roommate, sort of.

Mayson Ace Hardware in Fresno has taken on the business of neighboring retailer Valley Pool & Home Supply, according to an article in the Fresno Bee. Moving the two stores under one roof will allow the pool supplies store to retire, according to the report.

Larry LeMay, co-owner of the hardware store told the newspaper: “We felt like it was a good fit.”

The store is located at 3071 W. Bullard Ave. in Fresno.

An Ace Hardware store in Rochester, N.Y., is offering a reward for information leading to an arrest related to two recent burglaries. 

According to an article in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, the April 14 and 15 burglaries were captured on the store’s surveillance camera. Two males were seen on the tape removing chainsaws and concrete chop saws.

Preliminary data from the Monthly Retail Trade Survey shows sales for hardware stores (NAICS 44413) ahead of the same period last year.

Unadjusted sales for hardware stores in February, the latest month of available statistics for NAICS 44413, were $1.417 billion, up from $1.245 billion in February 2011.

The data was released this week by the U.S. Census Bureau along with the Advance Monthly Retail Trade Report.

Midwest hardware retailer Nuts and Bolts will open a new location in Overland Park, Kan., April 26.

As previously reported, the store in the Kansas City area will be the company’s fifth location, and will occupy a building vacated by a sporting goods retailer. The new, 16,000 square foot Nuts and Bolts hardware store will adopt the Destination True Value format, design and merchandising concepts. 

The store is planning an official grand opening ceremony May 26-28.
