In the San Francisco Bay area and Silicon Valley, Eric Hassett of Hassett Ace Hardware came to grips with all three lessons during the state’s headline-grabbing deluge. There were reports of 12 inches falling overnight in some counties -- high winds, widespread power outages and fears of mudslides.

Oak Brook, Illinois-based Ace Hardware reported November same-store sales were up 9.9% over November 2013.

In addition, same-store transactions improved by 4.9% year over year.

According to Ace President and CEO John Venhuizen, the gains came despite the decision of most Ace stores to remain closed on Thanksgiving. “November same-store sales were up 9.9 percent, and looking ahead, I’m confident that many of our loyal and local consumers will find equally compelling values for their last-minute Christmas shopping needs at their neighborhood Ace.”

Lumberyards, hardware stores and home centers fared well in the most recent government report measuring monthly retail sales.

In the month of November, NAICS 444 businesses – building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers – showed 1.4% month-to-month gains on an adjusted basis, and 7.8% gains compared to a year ago.

Hardware industry vendors descended on Fort Wayne, Indiana, Dec. 2 as Do it Best Corp.’s Open Buying Day kicked off at its headquarters.

The event enabled Do it Best merchandise managers to meet one-on-one with prospective vendors interested in doing business with Do it Best Corp. and its member-owners. The products presented as part of this year’s Open Buying Day covered all product categories, from tools to housewares.  

Prospective domestic and international vendors participated.

Springfield, Massachusetts-based Rocky's Ace Hardware is getting ready for its fourth annual holiday pet food drive.

All 32 Rocky's Ace Hardware stores have partnered with their local Humane Society or Shelter to collect food for homeless and abandoned pets in their communities. The collection areas will be marked with signs and baskets.

Describing its third-quarter performance as record-breaking, Oak Brook, Illinois-based Ace Hardware Corp. reported total revenues of $1.13 billion for the third quarter of 2014, an increase of 9.1%, from the third quarter of 2013.

Net income was $37.3 million for the third quarter of 2014, up 8.4%.
