The Pro Dealer Industry Scoreboard command center here at 425 Park Ave. was humming with the sound of survey submissions when the editors noticed something interesting.

Several respondents were answering a simple question about corporate structure as if it were a profound inquiry into corporate culture.

The simple question was: “Who’s in charge?”

The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), in a recent study on the effectiveness of real estate appraisals, found that the Appraisal Subcommittee, which oversees the regulatory programs established by the states, has not adequately performed its duties because of underfunding and other problems.

Tim-Br Marts has appointed John Steen as CFO. A senior financial executive, Steen has operational experience across a range of sectors, primarily in agribusiness/retail, manufacturing, oil and gas, and energy.

Steen, who will be based out of the company’s Calgary, AB office, will report directly to president and CEO Tim Urquhart.

He has held executive roles at a number of organizations, including UFA Co-operative Limited, Ontario Power Authority, and in South Africa at Teves Group.

Siding and roofing were the areas that saw the biggest year-over-year percentage gains in planned home improvement activity, according to the latest tally from the Home Improvement Research Institute (HIRI). 


The most common planned project? Lawns, with a 14% incidence rate, and landscaping/fencing, with a 12.1% rate.


These gainers give a clear indication that the consumer’s home improvement thoughts are gravitating toward the outdoors and the home exterior.

The J.D. Power and Associates 2011 Windows and Patio Doors Satisfaction Study indicates that consumers have increased their desire for energy-efficient windows and patio doors over previous years. 

The proportion of consumers who indicate they purchased Energy Star-qualified windows averaged 95% in the most recent study, demonstrating a high level of importance and awareness of energy-efficient window features and technologies.

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), which serves as the purchasing arm of the U.S. government, has announced new standards for all broadloom (wall-to-wall) carpet and carpet tile purchased through the GSA. Current GSA carpet suppliers have until Jan. 1, 2012, to certify their products to NSF/ANSI 140 Gold Level in order for their carpets to be considered for purchase.

LP’s Flameblock sheathing, a fire-resistant oriented strand board (OSB), has earned a UL listing from the Underwriters Laboratories Canada (ULC). This listing followed three rounds of fire testing by ULC, satisfying requirements for use of the ULC label on the product. The testing was conducted at ULC’s fire testing facility in Toronto, Ontario.
