A survey of members of the American Hardware Manufacturers Association (AHMA) shows that the ongoing economic crisis in Europe has affected 52% of the businesses involved. Another 33% said they were unaffected. The remainder were unsure and not involved in European commerce.

Whether or not the housing sector of the home improvement industry is poised for growth split the survey respondents three ways: 41% said yes, 22% said no, and the remainder weren’t sure.

San Diego-based WD-40, whose brands include a variety of lubricants and cleaning products, reported net sales of $87.0 million for the third quarter of fiscal 2012, an increase of 2% from the same quarter of its last fiscal year. Year-to-date net sales were $257.9 million, up 5% from the same period last fiscal year.

Net income for the third quarter was $9.1 million, an increase of 13% compared with the prior-year fiscal quarter. Year-to-date net income was $26.5 million, an increase of 1% from a year ago.

Fastener maker Simpson Manufacturing Co. reported net sales of $130.7 million for its fourth fiscal quarter of 2011, a 9.3% increase over sales of $119.6 million for the same quarter of 2010. The Pleasanton, Calif.-based  company had income, net of tax, of $4.9 million for the fourth quarter of 2011 compared to a loss, net of tax, of $4.5 million for the fourth quarter of 2010.

ProBuild Holdings has announced the appointment of Robert Marchbank, the former CEO of European operations for Wolseley, as its new CEO.  Fred Marino, who had filled the role of interim CEO for the past several months, will continue to serve as vice chairman of the company’s board of directors.

Pleasanton, Calif.-based Simpson Manufacturing reported third-quarter income of $19.4 million, up 5.4% from $18.4 million in the third quarter of 2010. Net sales for the quarter increased 10.9% to $162.4 million, compared with net sales of $146.4 million in the year-ago period.

Benton Harbor, Mich.-based Whirlpool Corp. posted third-quarter net earnings of $177 million, compared with net earnings of $79 million in the same period last year. Sales in the quarter were $4.6 billion, up 2% to $4.5 billion reported in the third quarter of 2010.

Milwaukee-based A. O. Smith Corp. has named Ajita Rajendra president and chief operating officer, effective Sept 1.

Rajendra will be responsible for A. O. Smith’s water heater operations in North America, China, Europe and India, as well as the company’s water purification business in China. The $1.5 billion business has 17 manufacturing plants around the world and employs approximately 10,000 people.

Organizers of the Internationale Eisenwarenmesse -- or, International Hardware Fair -- are seeing growing industry demand in worldwide hand-held power tools.

According to Koelnmesse, the 2010 growth rates in Europe matched the ones in Asia with 8%. Europe is currently the world’s largest market for handheld power tools (EUR 3.2 billion) followed by North America (EUR 1.9 billion) and the Asia Pacific region (EUR 1.5 billion).

St. Paul, Minn.-based 3M has reported second-quarter net income of $1.16 billion, up 3.6% from $1.12 billion in the second quarter of 2010. Net sales totaled $7.7 billion, up 14.1% from $6.7 billion in the year-ago period.

Sales increased in all regions: Europe was up 24.1%, Latin America/Canada was up 20.2%, Asia Pacific was up 11%, and the United States was up 8.7%.

Tool manufacturer Stanley Black & Decker reported net sales of $2.62 billion for its second quarter, an increase from $2.37 billion in the same period a year ago.

Net income for the New Britain, Conn., company was $197.3 million, up from $45.8 million in the second period last year.

Stanley Black & Decker has agreed to buy Niscayah, a European electronic security and monitoring company for $1.2 billion, including assumed debt. Stanley will pay $18.00 per share in cash (in Swedish currency) for the Stockholm-based company, 24% more than an all-stock offer by another firm, Securitas AB, and a 15% premium to Niscayah's stock price at close on June 23, 2011.
