New York City -- Kyle Dancho, Stanley Black & Decker's president of Hand Tools and Fastening, described product successes and economic challenges during a media briefing here at the Westin Hotel in Manhattan.

Despite the economic doldrums that has decimated the ranks of construction workers -- a key target for the company's products -- Dancho said Stanley is growing. Innovation drives success in hand tools, particularly, he added.

Atlanta-based Southern Casual Living bought the patio umbrella division of Southern Sales & Marketing.

"We see the umbrella market moving to more of a China 'factory direct' business model, so I sold this division," said Ken Harbaugh, majority shareholder of Southern Sales. " Some of the people moving over to the new company have been longtime associates with our company, and I wish them all the best.  They know that I am available to help them at any time.”

The challenges from unfriendly weather hit Scotts Miracle-Gro hard in the quarter ended July 2, as sales declined 10% to $1.06 billion.

The decline was driven primarily by poor weather across most of the United States throughout the duration of the lawn and garden season, as well as a more competitive promotional landscape and changes in certain retailer strategies within the mass merchandise channel, the Marysville, Ohio-based company said.

The next phase for Home Depot's supply chain transformation is the implementation of a new forecasting and replenishment system within the company's 19 rapid deployment centers (RDCs).

"This new system integrates our store and DC systems and is an important step in improving the throughput and productivity of our overall supply chain," said Ted Decker, the Atlanta-based retailer's senior VP U.S. Retail, speaking at the recent Oppenheimer & Co. Consumer Conference.

In addition to glossy case studies of growing members, Chicago-based True Value Co.'s freshly released 2010 Annual Report forecasts a sixth straight "consistent patronage dividend" in 2011.

The report's letter to retailers, co-signed by CEO Lyle Heidemann and chairman Brian Webb, also forecasts about 40 line reviews this year. Another forecast is for an additional 1.25 million sq. ft. of Destination True Value retail space, up from the 900,000 sq. ft. that was added in 2010.

The Home Depot, the world's largest home improvement retailer, announced that Aaron Carmack, regional VP for the Pacific North region, has been promoted to president, Home Depot Canada, effective Jan. 31. 

Carmack is replacing Annette Verschuren, who is leaving the company after nearly 15 years of service.
