A new Houzz study examines the many motivations behind landscaping projects in 2014, and they range from the purely practical to the pleasure-seeking.

Among the findings were that 56% are improving their yard for entertaining purposes, and 55% are seeking to problem-solve (that's 41% to protect against flooding, 25% to protect against sun exposure, and 23% to create more privacy). Additionally, 30% of homeowners in the West are attempting to find drought-related solutions.

Founded in 1922, General Tools & Instruments is a designer and developer of precision specialty hand tools and handheld test instruments for consumers and professionals.

Paint manufacturer Benjamin Moore accepted the HYLAND Award from designer Christopher Hyland.

Hyland called Benjamin Moore paint "An American original" and said "Benjamin Moore has always been, is now and will always be designer paint" in a speech at the ASID NY Metro Chapter's annual party at Holiday House, Traditional Home Magazine's designer showcase, which this year benefited The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Honeywell has unveiled its new Designer Series Cool Moisture Humidifier, which help alleviate dry indoor air conditions in a sleek, decor-friendly format.

The Designer Series runs for up to 48 hours at a time and shuts off automatically when it's empty, making it ideal for use in medium to large rooms.

Using ultrasonic technology, the humidifier creates a fine mist that can be reguated using various moisture controls.

It also features filter-free technology and a contemporary design that fits easily beneath a faucet for refilling.

Tom Moser, founder and designer of furniture company Thos. Moser, has been inducted into the New England Design Hall of Fame in the Specialty Design category.

"I never thought of myself as a designer, but rather as a builder working closely with form," Moser said. "The funny thing is that I learned my woodworking technology from people who preceded me by hundreds of years, doing restoration and repair work."

Thanks to its creative handling of storage space, Charlotte-area custom home builder New Old, LLC gained the national kitchen of the week spotlight at Cultivate.com for the week of June 26 - July 3. 

Homeowner, designer and builder Mary Ludemann was responsible for the innovative storage ideas that initially caught the site's attention. Ludemann's team whipped up a cottage kitchen layout out of a basic tract home design, showcasing New Old's innovative approach to remodeling.

Lowe's has announced that it will partner with the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) in order to launch a program to educate and train Lowe's employees who specialize in interior kitchen and bath projects.

Because of this membership and training program, Lowe's employees who work in the kitchen cabinets, countertops and fashion plumbing departments and as interior project specialists will have the opportunity to earn NKBA certifications.

The Hackettstown, N.J.-based trade group asked 100 of its designers what they’ve been installing in their clients’ kitchens and bathrooms, and then distilled the results into 11 trends.
