Kathrein has 25 years of experience in the lumber and building material industry, including senior management positions at 84 Lumber, BMC West, and most recently, ProBuild.

Alexander Lumber operates 20 yards in Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin, along with two truss plants and a counter-top facility.

Steve Bursten, CEO, and Steve Wishnow, President, will continue to lead Exciting Windows under this new joint venture. Both have been with the company since its inception 10 years ago.

Gina Schaefer, CEO of nine-store, D.C.-area Ace chain A Few Cool Hardware Stores, was recognized recently as a top female CEO during the SmartCEO Brava! Awards.

Schaefer was among 32 women (of 200 applicants) recognized by Washington SmartCEO Media during the July 30 ceremony.

Schaefer has been at the helm of the Ace chain since opening her first hardware store in 2003. Today, she sits on the Ace Hardware Corporate Board and is the board president for Think Local First D.C., a board vice chair for House of Ruth and a member of the Advisory Board for Jubilee Jobs.

Online home furnishings company Wayfair has added e-commerce expert Romero Rodrigues to its board of directors.

Rodrigues, a 36-year-old Brazil native, is currently global CEO at South African company Naspers, which acquired his company Buscape in 2009 for $374 million.

“E-commerce is an exciting, fast growing market sector in the world's economy and Wayfair is poised to be a major player in that growth,” Rodrigues said. “I am delighted to join Wayfair's board of directors and look forward to contributing to the company's continued success.”

Armstrong World Industries fell short of its stated goals in the second quarter, leading in turn to a lowered full-year guidance for 2014.

"Despite soft sales, we delivered second-quarter adjusted EBITDA in the middle of our guidance range," said CEO Matt Espe. "The softer-demand environment we experienced in the quarter and first half of 2014 has tempered our outlook for the back half of the year."

Electrolux president and CEO Keith McLoughlin reflected on the company's progress during the second fiscal quarter, pointing to prospects for growth.

However, net sales decreased by about 4.9% year-over-year, totaling $26.3 billion for the three-month period. That decrease was slightly smaller for the six-month period -- 2.0%.

Meanwhile, the company posted a net loss of $92 million for the quarter. For the first six months, the company's net income of $339 million compares to net income of $1.003 billion for the same six-month period last year.

A more stable lumber market boosted the second-quarter performance of Universal Forest Products, even as the company was forced to pay higher duties for Chinese nails. 

Universal reported second-quarter net earnings of $21.8 million, up 38.1% over net earnings of $15.8 million for the second quarter of 2013. Net sales were $773 million, up 4.6% from $738 million in the same quarter last year.

Piscataway, New Jersey-based American Standard Brands President and CEO Jay Gould was appointed to the board of directors of American Standard’s parent company, LIXIL Corporation.

Gould joined American Standard Brands in January 2012. 

Over the course of the next 18 months, according to the company’s announcement, Gould executed a plan that quadrupled the company's EBITA, grew sales by 10 percent and improved gross margins by 700 basis points.
