Hardware store sales improve in November

In the latest available stats, unadjusted sales for hardware stores increased to $1.738 billion in November.

The NAICS 44413 numbers released this morning in the Census Bureau's Monthly Retail Trade Report showed an increase of 7.2% compared to November of 2010. The November figure for hardware stores is also up slightly from October's unadjusted figure of $1.731 billion.

Hardware store sales ahead of last year

The latest tally from the U.S. Census shows hardware stores saw a sales decline in June compared with the previous month, but a sales increase from the previous year.

The Census Bureau's Monthly Retail Trade Report shows the unadjusted sales for NAICS code 44413 dealers -- or hardware stores -- in July was $1.756 billion on an unadjusted basis. That's a decline of 8.4% from $1.197 billion reported in June.

However, unadjusted 44413 sales in July were up 5.3% compared with the same month last year.

Outlook volatile for home improvement spending

After showing signs of recovery, spending on home improvements is expected to remain volatile and weak over the next several quarters, according to a report released today by the Remodeling Futures Program at the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University. The Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity (LIRA) projected that annual remodeling spending through the first quarter of 2012 will be down 4%. The Census Bureau’s improvements spending series, to which the LIRA is benchmarked, was recently revised downwards as well.

Unadjusted hardware store sales slip in February

The Census Bureau's Monthly Retail Trade Report  showed sales for hardware stores -- NAICS code 44413 -- were $1.212 billion on an unadjusted basis in February, the most recent month of available data in this business classification. The February figure is down 6.6% from January's unadjusted sales of $1.298 billion.

In February 2010, unadjusted hardware store sales as calculated by the Census Bureau were $1.235 billion.

Mixed story for hardware store sales

The Census Bureau's Monthly Retail Trade Report  showed sales for hardware stores -- NAICS code 44413 -- were $1.298 billion in January, the most recent month of available data in this business classification. That's down 22.9% from December's unadjusted figure of $1.683 billion.

But the rush on extra ice melt and shovels had a positive side: January sales were up 1.6% compared with January 2010.

After two years of declines, hardware sales are up

Hardware store sales increased slightly in 2010, according to government data released Tuesday.  

The Census Bureau's Monthly & Annual Trade Report showed December sales for hardware stores -- NAICS code 44413 -- reached $1.684 billion in December, the most recent month of available data in this business classification. That unadjusted figure is up 4.5% from the unadjusted figure from December 2009.

For the full year, hardware stores sales were $18.756 billion, up 0.7% from 2009.

Bucking the trend: smaller homes

It's a long way from 1973, when "single family" usually meant "single story." But numbers clearly show a dip in the size of new American houses.

After three decades of steadily expanding home sizes, the average area of a new house competed in the United States is down  more than 80 square feet from its 2007 peak, according to statistics released recently by the Census Bureau. The average size of a house nationwide declined to 2,438 square feet in 2009. At its peak, the figure was 2,521 square feet.
