The 28th Golden Hammer Awards saw Bob Taylor enter the Home Channel Hall of Fame and Westminster, Mass.-based Aubuchon Hardware take home the Retailer of the Year award.

Single-store operator McDaniel’s Do-It Center of Snohomish, Wash., was also recognized as the Golden Hammer “Tools of the Trade” honoree.

As the National Hardware Show kicks off in Las Vegas, the Golden Hammer Awards program enters its 28th year.

Wednesday morning at the show, the Home Channel News Golden Hammer event will honor the best of the best among home improvement suppliers and recognize outstanding achievement in the retail field. A twist for 2012: A Golden Hammer panel discussion with the working title: “The recovery: Is it real? And what to do about it?”

Fort Wayne, Ind.-based Do it Best Corp. enhanced its e-commerce website devoted to the sale of Channellock products.

The new site, Channellockproducts.com, is a subsidiary of Do it Best Corp. and is described as “powered by Doitbest.com.”

The site is one of the outcomes of a major initiative in 2009 that brought certain Channellock products exclusively into Do it Best stores in the categories of protective gear, wet/dry vacs, flashlights and other licensed products.

The Home Channel Hall of Fame will welcome Do it Best Corp. CEO Bob Taylor during an induction ceremony at the 2012 National Hardware Show in Las Vegas.

The Home Channel Hall of Fame has been recognizing outstanding service to the hardware and home improvement industry since 2004. Recent inductees include Larry Stone (2011), president emeritus of Lowe’s, and Pat Farrah (2010), one of the original founders of The Home Depot.

Do it Best Corp. has named Gary Furst its VP human resources, general counsel and corporate assistant secretary, effective immediately.

As VP human resources, Furst will oversee all HR programs for Do it Best Corp., including compensation, benefits, employee recruitment, training and development. In addition, as general counsel, he will be responsible for management of all internal and external legal matters pertaining to Do it Best Corp.

Do it Best Corp. added to its leadership team at its Fort Wayne, Ind., world headquarters.

The co-op promoted Scott Liggett to Application Development Manager within its Information Technology division. Liggett will guide the company’s continually expanding efforts to enhance their offerings of mobile applications and technological efficiencies in supply chain management.

Dan Starr and Doug Roth will be promoted into Do it Best's upper management June 1, when longtime executives Dave Haist and Dave Dietz plan to retire. 

“Any transition like this is a mix of emotions and sentiment,” said Bob Taylor, president and CEO. “While we are saddened to see a couple of key, longtime contributors like Dave Haist and Dave Dietz retire, we are equally excited to have two very talented individuals in Dan Starr and Doug Roth stepping up to fill those positions.”

Fort Wayne, Ind.-based hardware co-op Do it Best Corp. announced Wednesday a changing of the guard as two longtime executives will retire effective June 30.

Dave Haist, executive VP and COO, and Dave Dietz, VP finance, will be replaced by Dan Starr and Doug Roth -- Starr as executive VP and COO and Roth as VP finance.

Currently, Starr is VP human resources, while Roth is director of financial reporting.

Fort Wayne, Ind.-based Do it Best Corp. has named Rich Lynch as its retail marketing director.

Lynch will oversee and guide the co-op’s retail marketing efforts through its 4,000 member-owned stores worldwide. He will also help drive the company’s member education and training programs.

At the 2011 Do it Best Fall Market in Indianapolis, the co-op distributed $105.8 million in combined rebates to member dealers. It was the eighth straight year that the distribution exceeded $100 million.

Fort Wayne, Ind.-based Do it Best Corp. reported net sales of $2.33 billion for the year ended June 25, 2011, an increase of 1.4% over the previous fiscal year.

Other data from the company's income statement showed gross profit for fiscal 2011 of $176.8 million, up 3.4% from $171 million last year.

Fort Wayne, Ind.-based co-op Do it Best Corp. named company veteran Randy Rusk as its new communications director.

In the position, Rusk will help develop and implement the Do it Best Corp. communications strategy and manage all internal and external communications efforts, including video, education and training initiatives, creative development and campaign execution, as well as media and public relations.

Do it Best Corp. promoted two new regional managers who will focus on building and strengthening member relationships in the eastern and southern United States.

The company named David Enmark regional sales and business development manager for a large portion of the southern United States. Also, Do it Best Corp. named Rob Schmiedel regional sales and business development manager for the northeastern United States.

The Do it Best October Market will return to Indianapolis Oct. 8 to 10, with some things remaining the same, and some things changing. 

“We really believe this market will be like no other that our members have seen or experienced,” said Do it Best CEO Bob Taylor. “With the continued momentum of our Extreme Growth initiatives, along with outstanding purchasing opportunities in an expanded convention center and top-notch slate of events and speakers, we’ve got a lot of very exciting things in store for our members."

Orme Hardware owner Richard McCoy describes his company’s claim to fame with a simple description: “We still run an old-time hardware store.” 


Of course, there’s a lot more to it than that. Certainly, the Do it Best Corp. member with business roots that reach back to 1869 has an old-school flavor — one of the locations still operates with rolling ladders and wooden drawers, but McCoy is not only a recognized “Extreme Retailer,” he’s an innovator and a growth-oriented operator even in today’s contracting times.

With locations in Baton Rouge and Denham Springs, La., Do it Best Corp. member Holmes Building Materials operates two home centers, both with about 10,000 sq. ft. of retail space, supplemented by full lumberyards out back and powered by a 22-truck fleet. One location is heavily commercial, the other is heavily retail-oriented, and both operate a store-within-a-store Holmes Windows Doors & More.

Fort Wayne, Ind.-based Do it Best Corp. hired the right guy to kick off a 7 a.m. breakfast event -- the exceedingly enthusiastic sportscaster Dick Vitale.

Vitale will headline the co-op's kickoff breakfast during the Oct. 8 to 10 Do it Best October Market at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis.

Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest differences. Then again, sometimes it’s the big things.


The Fort Wayne, Ind.-based Do it Best Corp., fresh from its October Market in Indianapolis, is advancing a slate of initiatives both large and small. Projects range from reprinting its field staff’s business cards to building what it calls a digital World Class Commerce Center. And as CEO Bob Taylor sees it, they are all in service of one overarching goal: serving the members. 


Let’s start with the big plans first.

Do it Best Corp. announced the soft opening of the first four Pongs Do it Best Home Centers in Jakarta, Indonesia, earlier this month.

With the openings in Indonesia, the Fort Wayne, Ind.-based co-op expanded its customer base to 50 countries.
