Atlanta-based The Home Depot reported first-quarter sales of $19.1 billion, up 7.4% from last year's quarter, which had one less week. 

On a like-for-like basis, comparable-store sales for the first quarter were positive 4.3%. U.S. stores comps were positive 4.8%, also on a like-for-like basis.

Insolroll Window Shading Systems, of Louisville, Colo., announced a recall of its Insolroll Solar Powered and Rechargeable Motor Roller Shades due to a fire hazard. 

The voluntary recall affectes about 1,500 units sold at independent window covering installer retailers nationwide from June 2012 through March 2013 for $400 to $700 per window shade.

Bloomington, Minn.-based The Toro Co. reported record highs in sales and earnings for the second quarter, despite a double-digit sales decline in the residential division.

The company posted net earnings of $78.4 million, on a net sales increase of 1.9%, to $704.5 million for its fiscal second quarter ended May 3. 

In the comparable fiscal 2012 period, the company delivered net earnings of $68.8 million on net sales of $691.5 million.

The number of existing-home sales increased 0.6% in April to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.97 million, compared with an upwardly revised 4.94 million in March.

The figures were released Wednesday morning by the National Association of Realtors (NAR). Sales remain below underlying demand because of limited inventory and tight credit, according to the NAR.

Research from Port Washington, N.Y.-based NPD Group shows that in the 12 months ended March 2013, sales of home beverage appliances were more than $2.6 billion.

Home beverage appliances include home soda machines, single-serve coffeemakers, drip coffeemakers, espresso makers, countertop blenders, juice extractors, citrus juicers and tea makers.

The Home Depot's top merchant had a lot more good news than bad news to share with investors regarding the retailer's first quarter performance.

"We are pleased with our performance in the first quarter with strength in our business across the breadth of the store," said Craig Menear, executive VP merchandising. The only departments with negative comp-store sales were indoor and outdoor garden -- the result of unusually cold weather in parts of the country, he said.

Mooresville, N.C.-based Lowe’s reported net earnings of $540 million for the quarter ended May 3, 2013, a 2.5% increase over the same period a year ago. 

Sales for the quarter decreased 0.5% to $13.1 billion from $13.2 billion in the year-ago quarter. Comparable-store sales for the quarter decreased 0.7%.
