Tractor Supply joins the S&P 500

It's official: after months of off-the-curve growth on the stock market, Tractor Supply Co. has secured a spot on the S&P 500 index.

The change was announced Thursday by the S&P Dow Jones Indices and will be effective after the close of trading next Thursday.

Tractor Supply is replacing Life Technologies Corp. on the index, which is being acquired by Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc.

Between Jan. 2, 2013 and Jan. 2, 2014, Tractor Supply's stock grew by 49.4%.
