NLBMDA names new president

Michael P. O'Brien

The National Lumber and Building Materials Dealers Association (NLBMDA) named Michael P. O'Brien as president.

O'Brien will be responsible for guiding NLBMDA's organizational performance, providing strategic leadership and serving as the association's spokesperson on national legislative and regulatory issues. His primary objective is to work with the Federated members to develop NLBMDA's national policy agenda and grow the lumber and building materials dealer industry presence with key public policy lawmakers.

He replaces NLBMDA interim president Russell Snyder. "Between his previous work experience and the many industry professional honors that Michael has received, it is obvious that he will bring those qualities that will most benefit NLBMDA, including a passion for NLBMDA’s mission to have a louder political voice for our industry," Snyder said.

For the nearly 10 years prior to joining NLBMDA, O'Brien served as chief operating officer of the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI), a trade association, where he was responsible for all operational aspects of the organization. Before that, O'Brien was the assistant vp-state & local affiliate services for the 200,000-member National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

"Michael is a huge asset to the NLBMDA community. His leadership and decades of expertise in our industry will prove invaluable to our association as we continue to push our national agenda for America's building material suppliers," said NLBMDA chairman, Harold Baalmann, owner of Wichita, Kan.-based B&B Lumber.

O'Brien holds an master's degree in international affairs from George Washington University and a bachelor's degree in political science and European history from the the State University of New York at Oneonta.
