NAICS 444 sales increase over last year

Government data released today estimated sales for home centers, building material dealers, garden centers and hardware stores -- NAICS code 444 -- declined slightly in November, compared with October. But the advance estimate showed a healthy increase over the same month last year.

The U.S. Census Bureau's monthly sales estimate for the 444 category, adjusted for seasonal variation, was $24.87 billion in November. That’s' down 0.1% from October, but up 12.3% from November 2009.

In the larger picture, the advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for November were $378.7 billion, an increase of 0.8% from the previous month, and 7.7% above November 2009. Retail trade sales were up 0.9% from October 2010, and 8.1% above last year. Non-store retailers’ sales were up 14.2% from November 2009 and auto and other motor vehicle dealers’ sales were up 12.8% from last year.

Advance sales estimates for both the 444 classification, and its hardware store subset of 44413, are not available for November. However, unadjusted preliminary sales for October in both of these two categories showed an increase over September.

The all encompassing home channel category of 444 showed unadjusted October sales of $24.56 billion, up 4.1% over September, and up 10.4% over October 2009.

The hardware store classification (code 44413) showed October preliminary sales of $1.523 billion, up 4.6% from September, but down 0.9% from October.
