May unemployment rate creeps up to 7.6%

Both the number of unemployed persons and the unemployment rate were essentially unchanged in May, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The nation's unemployment rate crept up to 7.6% in May, compared with 7.5% in April, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday morning. 

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 175,000.

The employment-to-population ratio, which was unchanged in May at 58.6%, has shown little movement during the past year, according to the Employment Situation Summary.

Retail trade employment increased by 28,000 in May. Employment in construction showed little change over the month.
