DOE reveals thermostat data

According to the latest “Today in Energy” brief from the Department of Energy, programmable central thermostats show household penetration level of about 37%, for heating equipment.

Cooling equipment penetration is less common, at 29%.

“Thermostats are used to control central heating equipment in 85% of households, and less than half of those thermostats are programmable. For households with central cooling equipment, 60% have a central thermostat and about half of those are programmable.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s new “Today in Energy” brief looks at how many U.S. homes have central thermostats to control their heating and cooling equipment.
